Literary Genres
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
• identify the relationship between form, genre, and meaning
• recall the four main literary forms,
• differentiate graphic fiction from flash fiction,
• write in one of the genres, and;
• appreciate the unique features of each genre.
Genre
• (French: “kind” or “sort”) a distinctive type or
category of literary composition, such as the epic,
tragedy, comedy, novel, and short story.

•Genres, in turn, are like the branches of the family


tree. A genre is a specific style or category of writing.
Form
• The form of a piece of writing is simply its
structure, how it is constructed and organized.

• Literary forms are like the roots of the literary


family tree.
Meaning
• is the writers message to you reader

• we get the meaning once we react to the certain


literary text

• writers across the globe select various forms and


genres to help them express the meaning of there text
21st Century Literature
• the new literary work created with the last decade
written by contemporary or modern authors

•Deals with current themes/issues and reflects a


technological culture that often breaks traditional
writing rules.

Graphic Fiction / Novel
• Narrative in prose form conveyed to the readers in comic
book formats or dimensions.
• is a creative piece written in comic form

• the pictures are arranged in sequenced in image panels and


dialogues are written in speech bubbles. The illustrations
allow the readers to imagine and experience the characters
and events in the story.
Features
of Graphic Fiction (Singh, 2012)
• Autographic forms are the marks of author’s
handwriting which creates an impact that the whole
novel is a manuscript and thus provides a sense of
intimacy.

• Graphic novels encourage interactivity in the minds


of the reader as he fills in the blanks image panels

the reader imagine the actions portrayed in the
story.
• The language, syntax, and meaning of a graphic

Flash Fiction
