Household Survey
Introduction:
In order to capture the movement of persons, We visited different homes and made interview about the movements (trips) of
persons of a certain day. The survey was a sample survey and targeted persons were selected randomly from the population of
the Study area.
Purpose:
To capture people’s movement such as origin, destination, trip purpose, travel time etc.
Objectives:
• To elicit socio‐economic characteristics of the  household
• To elicit travel characteristics of the  household (total trips, purpose of trips, mode  used, trip length,
trip origin and destination  etc.)
• To appreciate desired pattern of traffic.
• To elicit opinion (of the residents of the study  area) regarding general transport problems of
the city and the probable areas of  improvement.
Number of surveyed houses: 113
Expected outcome:
Socio‐economic  profile  of  the  study  area,  number  of  trips, purpose of trips, mode used, trip length, trip origin and
destination, vehicle ownership.

INTRODUCTION TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

HOUSEHOLD SURVEY B.PLANNING, SEMESTER V (2019-2023) 13
Methodology: Simple random sampling
Confidence interval:
The confidence interval (also called margin of error) is the plus-or-minus. There are different equations that can be used to calculate
confidence intervals depending on factors such as whether the standard deviation is known or smaller samples (n<30) are involved,
among others.
Confidence level:
The confidence level is a measure of certainty regarding how accurately a sample reflects the population being studied within a
chosen confidence interval.
Sample size:
The larger your sample size, the more sure you can be that their answers truly reflect the population. This indicates that for a given
confidence level, the larger your sample size, the smaller your confidence interval. However, the relationship is not linear (i.e.,
doubling the sample size does not halve the confidence interval).
Percentage:
When determining the sample size needed for a given level of accuracy you must use the worst case percentage (50%). You should
also use this percentage if you want to determine a general level of accuracy for a sample you already have. To determine the
confidence interval for a specific answer your sample has given, you can use the percentage picking that answer and get a smaller
interval.
Sample size calculation:
Sample size = (z2)* (p̂ (1+p̂ )) /c2
Where:
Z = Z value (e.g. 1.96 for 95% confidence level)
p̂  = percentage picking a choice, expressed as decimal (0.5 used for sample size needed)
c = confidence interval or margin of error

INTRODUCTION TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORTATION

BASIC SURVEYS PLANNING B.PLANNING, SEMESTER V 20
(2019-2023)
INTRODUCTION:
Traffic Data Collection is basic requirements for transport planning. Traffic Data forms an integral part of national economics and
such knowledge is essential in drawing up a rational transport policy for movement of passengers and goods by both government
and the private sectors.

Traffic Volume Count is counting of number of vehicles passing through a road over a period of time. It is usually expressed in
terms of Passenger Car Unit (PCU) and measured to calculate Level of Service of the road and related attributes like congestion,
carrying capacity, V/C Ratio, identification of peak hour or extended peak hour etc.

Traffic volume count or TVC is usually done as a part of transportation surveys, TVC can be classified or unclassified.

The study of Classified Traffic Volume Count is to understand factors that form the basis of:
a) Checking the efficiency/saturation of the road network by comparing current traffic volume with the calculated capacity or by
identifying level of service
b) Establishing the use of the road network by vehicles of different categories, traffic distribution, PCU/vehicle value
c) Need of median shifting or road widening

Duration and Interval of Traffic Counts

In order to predict traffic flow volumes that can be expected on the road network during specific periods, knowledge of the fact is
required that traffic volumes changes considerably at each point in time. There are three important cyclical variations:

•Hourly pattern: the way traffic flow characteristic varies throughout the day and night;
•Daily Pattern: The day-to-day variation throughout the week
•Monthly and yearly Pattern: The season-to-season variation throughout the year.

COMPREHENSIVE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT STUDIES.
Aim :
To carry out a traffic studies and analyze the traffic characteristics.

Objectives :
1. To study relevant literature in order to understand the concepts of traffic studies .
2. To appreciate existing transport network in the city In order to assess growth of transport sector by collecting the required data.
3. To determine the service flow rate in PCU/PCE unit.
4. To determine of vehicle composition in traffic stream.
5. To find the PHV,PCU,V/C RATIO, etc.

Methodology :
Methods for volume survey:
There are two major methods of counting vehicle for volume survey. They are-i)Manual Counting Methodii) Automatic counting
method

BASIC SURVEYS PLANNING B.PLANNING, SEMESTER V 32
(2019-2023)
ISSUES:-

• There is more traffic in Moosarambagh Junction when compared to Nalgonda Junction.

• The major disadvantage is unproductive time. People don’t reach offices at the right time and so their important
work or meetings get delayed. This may also lead to setbacks in their profession.
• So many vehicles more than the road capacity lead to the emission of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere causing
pollution.
• Daily traffic jams or congestion increases the stress levels of the commuters. Frustration and irritation build up.
• To avoid the jam, sometimes people drive very unsafely and that leads to accidents or injuries.
• High chance of collision due to tight spacing between the vehicles.
• Emergency vehicles like ambulance and fire brigade get delayed due to traffic jams and they are unable to reach
the destination on time. This may lead to major mishaps.
• Increase in use of narrow lanes to avoid congestion on the main roads.
RECOMMENDATIONS:-

 Only 3% of total vehicles were buses. Public transport should be increased and improved.
 5% of total vehicles were non-motorized vehicles. A dedicated lane should be provide to facilitate non-
motorized vehicle.

PROPOSALS:-
We consider a stretch of 3.7 kilometer that is from Nalgonda x Road to Dilsuknagar
Features of this road are :

• 3 line road on both the sides.

• Tar bitumen road.
• As it is a National Highway (NH 65) passing through one of the major business centers of the city .
• All kinds of vehicles like Buses, Cars , Bikes, Lorries and Autos use the road.
• 1 traffic signal and 2 U turns should be crossed to reached the destination .

• After conducting speed and delay survey we have identify some issues for that we are giving some proposals .

• There is a lot of traffic jam due to the onside parking on roads between the Nalgonda x Road and Mosarambagh
for that we are proposing a parking space for vehicles beside the Malakpet Market that will reduce the congestion
of traffic .
• Recently ,GHMC proposal for parking facilities in Hyderabad in which one of the place is Nalgonda x Road.

• Other issues are , traffic jam near Malakpet Market through which the lorries and autos in and out from the
market that is causing traffic jam and delay for that we are proposing that the Heavy vehicles should be travel
through back side gate that is not in use with that traffic jam will be less .

RECOMMENDATIONS:-

We have to increase the width of the road towards New Market to Nalgonda X Road to reduce traffic congestion.

SWOT:-
STRENGTH:
It is a commercial area
NH 65 passing through these junctions

WEAKNESSES
There is a lot of traffic jam during peak hours due to the road width

OPPORTUNITIES:
For parking we can give space beside new market which will reduce the traffic congestion

THREATS:
From Nalgonda X Road towards new market high load vehicles travel in and out thus results in
accidents due to the heavy traffic over the junction.

• The maximum speed attained by the vehicles is 50.4km/hr., it is less than the speed limits mentioned by
the IRC Standards, i.e., 60 km/hr.
• Considering that the 85th percentile speed is the best value for determining the speed limits for traffic
regulations, the spot speed calculated from our gathered data is less than 27 km/hr.
• The 15th percentile speed is 12 km/hr. The vehicles travelling below this speed cause an interference with
the traffic stream and may cause hazards.

Origin Destination Survey

Introduction
In a transportation study, it is often necessary to know the exact origin and destination of the trips. It is not only necessary to know
how many trips are made, but also group these trips with reference of the zones of their origin and destination. Other information
yielded by O-D survey includes land-use of the zones of origin and destination, household characteristics of the trip making family,
time of the day when journeys are made, trip purpose and mode of travel. Origin is defined as the place where the trip begins and
destination is defined as the place where the trip ends

Scope
To conduct O_D studies and collect data regarding to number of trips generated, attracted and distributed.

Objective
• To judge the adequacy of existing routes and to use in planning new network of roads.
• To plan transport system and mass transit facilities in cities including routes and schedules of operation.
• To locate terminals and to plan terminal facilities.
• To locate intermediate stops of public transport.
• To locate new bridges as per traffic demands.

Methodology
Road Side Interview Method:
The vehicles are stopped at previously decided interview stations by a group of persons and the answers to prescribed questionnaire
are collected on the spot. The information collected include the place and time of origin and destination, route, locations of
stoppages, the purpose of the trip, type of vehicle and number of passengers in each vehicle.

Survey Methodology
● Pedestrian Volume Count was conducted to know:
○ Number of Jaywalkers/ Facility Users in respective junctions and directions.
○ To also understand the peak time of usage.
● This Survey was conducted at 5 different locations:
○ Weekdays - Near NLG ‘X’ Road, Near Yashoda Hospital, Near New Market, Near Subbaya Gari Hotel.
○ Weekend - Near NLG ‘X’ Road, Near Yashoda Hospital.
● Reasons for selecting these locations:
○ Major Junctions with Bus stops, hence used by many pedestrians

Survey Method

The survey is done in 3 intervals i.e., Morning (7AM to 10AM), Afternoon (12PM to 2PM), Evening (5PM to
7PM)
In all directions at every junction, Facility Users and Jaywalkers were counted simultaneously, 15 min
interval (15min break & 15min Count), the total count for 1hour would be 30min, which was later doubled
to get hourly data, then used to make analysis.

Recommendations :
• As the footpath is not available along the complete length of major road we need to increase the total
length of footpath so that the entire major road length has footpath along its length.

Proposals :
• Computed percentage of city covered with footpath is 50.82% this corresponds the level of service 2
• To improve the condition and make the level of service 1(>=75%),we need to increase the % of city
covered with footpaths.
• There should be a minimum increase in length of footpath by 2.31km.

V/C ratio of footpaths:

S.No. Name of the road Footpath side V/C ratio

1. Nalgonda X roads Left 0.0108
2. Nalgonda X roads Right 0.0050

• As the capacity of the footpath is greater than the pedestrian volume of the footpath, a greater number of
jaywalkers can use the footpath easily.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Survey Methodology
Boarding and alighting survey was conducted to know:
• the dependency of users on public transport
• choice of mode of transport.
• Accessibility, demand of a particular transport.
• Feasibility of the facility ( in terms of charges, comfort,
safety )
• And also to know the peak hours of public transport usage.
The survey is done in two locations i.e:
• Nalgonda cross road bus stop
• Sono vision bus stop near yashodha hospital
These locations were selected:
• Because the 2 bus-stops are the major bus-stops, and they
are easily accessible to majority of the users, they tend to
use.

BASIC SURVEYS PLANNING B.PLANNING, SEMESTER V 99
(2019-2023)
Observations

o People alighting at Malkpet station is high in the morning

o People boarding the train at Malkpet station towards Falaknama is high in the afternoon
o Most of the passengers are Students and employees
o The waiting time for each time is more than 30 min but no delay of trains is observed
o The trains halt at station for only 1 min
o No specific restriction is applied as per covid 19 norms

Suggestions

o As per the MoUD’s service level benchmark document, extent of supply (availability of public transport) should be level 2 or
above. The old Malkpet ward has LOS 1 & it should be maintain LOS.
o The Average waiting time for public transport users, should not be more than 12 minutes. The old Malkpet ward average
waiting time is 30 minutes this is majorly due to decrease of no of train travelling due to covid 19 pandemic it should be
regulated according to the situation
o Target for service coverage, in case of Old Malkpet will be service level 2 or above.

Multi model transit system
 Malkpet MMTS, Malkpet metro station and Bus stop are located within 150
metres radius
 The access to interchange between these transits is difficult due to lack of
connecting walkways/ pathways available
 The route from Malkpet metro station to MMTS is an arterial road with
continuous traffic flow the absence of footpath and direct connection to the Pedestrian volume count
MMTS are increasing the difficulty of interchanging between transits
 There is a existing foot over bridge connecting MMTS and the bus stop which
hold the capacity of passengers using it

Intermediate Public Transport Survey

SURVEY METHODOLOGY
Intermediate public transport survey was conducted to know:
• The dependency of users on intermediate public transport.
• Choice of mode of transport.
• Accessibility and demand of a particular transport.
• Feasibility and affordability of the facility ( in terms of charges, comfort, safety )
Location of the survey:
• The survey was done along Nalgonda X road, towards Malakpet railway station.
These locations were selected:
• To know the travel through autos/Share autos(IPT).
• Because most of the IPT users were seen arriving/departing here.

SURVEY METHOD
• The following data was collected by surveying the users who were using the IPT(autos) along the Nalgonda X
road, towards Malakpet railway station.
• Auto, Share auto & Taxi modes of IPT (Intermediate Public Transport) that has been found in the location.

HAWKERS AND VENDORS
Aim/objective: To allocate proper resources and spaces for informal sectors and reduce traffic or congestion caused by
hawkers.

Location: From starting to ending points of malakpet ward boundary.

Objectives: Since the study of hawkers and vendors is rational, the methodologies and approaches vary depending
upon the place, type of activity and the number of vendors and hawkers.
Hence, in this study, the methodology is as follows:
a)Understanding the meaning and reasons for setting up such informal sectors.
b)Primary survey and data collection. This primary data collection specifies about the location, resources available and
used, vendor or hawker and problems faced.
c) Analysing the situation with the data collected and representing the statistically.
d)Drawing out alternative solutions for the problems faced.
e)Recommending based on the alternatives taken.
f) Proposals.

According to national policy of vendors, the vendors cannot be relocated or does not have any right to relocate them.
So, to ensure less traffic occurred by the vendors and the stalls, we can recommend parking spaces which will
increase the space for pedestrians on the stretch and also reduces the traffic.
