Computer Networks

NAME
Computer Networks

 It is a set of devices or nodes that connect through a device. The devices can
transmit, receive and exchange any kind of data.
Benefits of Networks

 Resource Sharing
 Helpful in Back-up and Storage Solutions
 Selection of Network Methods According to Business Needs
 Cost Effective Management on Software
 Flexibility in Using Centralized Database
 Security of Data
Communication Media

 Set of connected systems through transmission medium for communicate and

sharing resources like data, software and hardware.

Transmitting Data
 Transmitting Data is the transfer of data from one device to another device.
Wireless Communication

 A method of transfer information from one device to other device, without wires,
cables or any physical devices.

Protocols

 Protocols are basically set of rules for transfer data between electronic devices.
Types of Networks

There are 3 major types of networks use in organization

 LAN
 MAN
 WAN
LAN (Local Area Network)

 Local Area Network is group of system that is connected to each other in smaller
area such as office.
 LAN is used for connecting two or more personal systems through a cable
network.
 Less Costly as it is design with cheap hardware like hubs, switch and cables
 Data transfer data at fast speed
 Good Security
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

 MAN is a network that covers an enormous area by interconnecting a different

LAN to form a huge network.
 Government agencies is using MAN for connectivity between citizens and private
industries.
 In MAN, several LANs are connected to each other through a communication
medium.
 It has a huge range as compare to Local Area Network (LAN).
WAN (Wide Area Network)

 WAN covers a large geographical area such as states or countries.

 A WAN is a huge network than the LANs.
 A WAN is not limited to a single location, but it covers an enormous area through
a telephone line, fiber optic cable or satellite links.
 The internet is one of the biggest WAN in the world.
 WAN is basically used in the field of Business, Government, and Education.
Intranet and Extranet

 An Intranet is a private network used by employees to communicate and

collaborate. They can also use intranet to create content, complete their work, and
engage according to organization policies.
 An extranet is also a private network. It works like a company intranet. But,
extranet allows access to authorized users from outside the company. These
external users are suppliers and partners.
Firewall

 A Firewall is a network security device that monitors incoming and outgoing

network traffic of an organization’s security policies. Basically, firewall is the
barrier that sits between a private internal network and the public Internet.
Firewall’s main purpose is to allow non-threatening traffic in and to keep
dangerous traffic out.
Uses of Communication

It would be hard to understand the importance of communication, and the workplace is no

exception. As many of the world's common communication methods have shifted. The devices
for that will be use for communication are:

 Telegraph
 Rotary-Dial Telephone
 Semaphore code
 Two-way radio
 Mobile phone

These devices are used for communication between two users for transit and receive messages.
