Principle and Working of Fan

Fan

An electric fan was one of the most important electric inventions of all time. The
electric fan is a device for producing a current of air or other gases or vapors.
Fans are used
 for circulating air in rooms and buildings.
 for cooling motors and transmissions; for cooling and drying people, materials, or
products.
 for ventilating and air-conditioning systems.

Principle and Working of Fan

Principle of Ceiling Fan

The ceiling fan's operation is based on the law of electromagnetic induction. A

motor which works on the principle of electromagnetic induction is known as the
induction motor. The heart of a ceiling fan is the induction motor. Electromagnetic
induction is the phenomenon in which the electromotive force is induced across the
electrical conductor when it is placed in a rotating magnetic field.

Structure and Mechanism

The electric motor, an electric machine within the fan converts electrical energy into
mechanical energy. The fan capacitor torques up the electric motor, allowing it to
start and run. An electrical current reaches the motor and then enters coils of wire
that are wrapped around a metal base. As this current passes through the wire, a
magnetic field is caused that expends force in a clockwise motion that actually
changes the electric energy into mechanical energy. This action causes the motor
coils to spin. As the coils are spinning, the fan captures this spinning motion,
transferring it to the fan blades

Power Consumption

Fans range in size from 36 inches to 56 inches using 55 to 100 watts, a typical 48
inch ceiling fan will use 75 watts.

If an electric fan of 75 watts is used daily for 12 hours, so a day consumption will be
75 ×12 =900 watt hours and if you calculate it for a period of 1 month (30 days ), it
will be 900 ×30 =27000 watt hours or 27 kilo watt hours or 27 kwh, it means 1 kwh
is equal to one unit, so total energy consumption is 27 units for a month. If your
electricity board charges @rupees 4 per unit it becomes 27 ×4 =108 rupees is the
current bill.

Efficient Usage & Maintenance

Energy Star models with larger blades gives more than 60% efficiency
compared to conventional counterparts.
Turning your A/C down 4 degrees or more and using a ceiling fan keeps
your body cool while decreasing energy usage.
DC Motor fan uses up to 70% less power than a standard AC fan.

Efficient Usage & Maintenance

Remove all dust from the blades and exposed parts of the fan
periodically.
To fix rattling of fan, check all components and tighten anything that
may have come loose with a screwdriver. An essential part of ceiling fan
maintenance is to periodically clean the motor.
The final step in fan maintenance is lubrication. There will be a small
hole at the top of the fan to insert the lubricating motor oil

Conclusion

The motor size and blade pitch are important factors that determine the quality
of the ceiling fan. Always go for a premium motor to ensure that the fan lasts.
The blade pitch should be high enough to maintain maximum airflow at all
times. Compare the different ceiling fan models before making a decision. One
can find remote-controlled ceiling fans, fans with lights, anti-dust features and
more.
