Electromagnetic
Waves
Task 4: All too Well

Presentation of the practical applications of the

Electromagnetic waves using different
strategies (skit, tik-tok, online selling, and vlog)
RADIO WAVES
• Longest wavelengths but lowest frequencies.
• Can travel through a vacuum, however most radio
waves traveled through air.
Uses of Radio Waves
• Radio/Television signals
Radio and television signals are radio waves that are
produced by making electrons vibrate. It has a long
wavelength capable to transmit sound and picture
information over long distances.
Uses of Radio Waves
• Global Positioning System (GPS)
is a space-based navigation
system that provides
geographical position and
time information anywhere
on or near the earth. It
communicates with stations
on the ground using radio
waves.
Uses of Radio Waves
• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
It is a medical imaging technique that uses powerful
magnets, computer and radio waves to make detailed
pictures inside your body.
MICROWAVES
• Radio waves with very short wavelength
• Used in satellite communication because it can
penetrate ionosphere.
Uses of Microwaves
• Satellite communication
Microwaves are used in satellite communications because
it can penetrate the earth’s atmosphere.
Uses of Microwaves
• Terrestrial communication
A cell phone is a radio transmitter and receiver that uses
microwaves. Cellular phones depend on overlapping
network of cells. Each cell has its tower that receives and
sends microwave signals.
Uses of Microwaves
• Cooking
The microwaves in a microwave oven penetrate and
agitate the water molecules within the food. Thus, they
create molecular friction which produces heat that will
cook the food.
Uses of Microwaves
• RADAR (Radio Detection and Ranging)
is a detection system used to determine the range, angle
or velocity of objects. It can be used to detect aircraft,
ships, and the like.
INFRARED WAVES
• Waves that lie in the region beyond the red end of the
visible spectrum.
• Most noticeable when given off by hot objects.
Uses of Infrared

• Remote control (IR remote)

• Thermal imaging/scanner
• Night vision goggles
• Infrared thermometer
• CCTV (Closed-circuit television)
Remote Control Night Vision Goggles

Thermal Imaging/scanner
Closed-circuit Television (CCTV)
VISIBLE WAVES
• Range of EM humans can see from 750 billionths to 400
billionths of a meter.
• Enables us to see things around us.
Uses of Visible
waves

• Colorful laser light or

light from fireworks

• Optical fibers in
telecommunications
and medicines
(endoscope)
ULTRAVIOLET WAVES
• Shorter wavelength than the violet light (invisible
spectrum)
• Source is sunlight.
• Have enough energy to enter skin cells
• can cause skin cancer
Uses of Ultraviolet waves
• Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation in sunlight interact with a protein in the
skin, converting it into vitamin D3, the active form of vitamin D, which
is essential for maintaining healthy bones and teeth.
• Used to sterilize medical supplies & equipments
• Detectives use fluorescent powder (absorbs UV & glows) to find
fingerprints
X RAYS
• Short wavelength but high frequency, it is very
penetrating.
• Produced by rapid acceleration of electrons
• Long wavelength can penetrate flesh but not bone.
• Short wavelength can penetrate through metal.
Uses of X-rays
• Diagnosing bone fractures Long wavelength X-rays can penetrate the
flesh but not the bones that’s why it is used in diagnosing bone
fractures.
• Airport security scanner The short wavelength X-rays can penetrate
through metals which can be used in airport security scanner.
GAMMA RAYS
•High energy rays produced from nuclear
reactions
•Has the shortest wavelength.
•Highest energy, can travel through several
centimeters of lead.
•Both can be used in radiation therapy to
kill diseased cells.
Uses of Gamma Rays
• Useful in cancer treatment
(radiotherapy)
Radiation can be…

• Non-ionizing radiation - does not have enough energy to remove

electrons from atoms and molecules.
Ex. Radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light and ultraviolet

• Ionizing radiation - high-energy EM waves like x-rays and gamma rays

are considered ionizing.
