Critical Analysis short story 13

Introduction:
"My turn” is written by Shahbano Alvi who is a graduate in graphic
design from the Department of Art and Design at the University of the
Punjab, Lahore. She is the founder and CEO of the independent
publishing house 'Ushba', founded in 2001.
Summary:
The story deals with loneliness, death, love, loss, and compassion. The
whole anthology is about our conscious and subconscious experiences of
lockdowns and their memory. Like the light that passes through colored
windowpanes, the stories take on the colors of medium. So do our
moods, which in a way are a reflection of what is happening around us.
Tone: The author has a sad tone as she is reminiscing about the past. Reflecting on
important events of her life that how losing a loved one made her emotionally
strong. She has used sentences like ' I just want to lie down and do nothing at all.
nothing at all'. Moreover, she has used words like sobbing, panting and solace.
Author's Style: The writing style of this story is informal as the author
has used contractions 'I've and wasn't' etc. The writer has shown more
empathy to convey emotions. Moreover, the author has used dashes
which is informal punctuation
Author's Purpose: The author's purpose is to entertain as it is a story. It
includes how she lost her parents and how her family and friends stayed
courageous during the pandemic when there was no social contact and
proximity dwindled.
Appeals:The appeal used in the article is pathos as authors has made the
reader feel sympathetic and sad. Since no logical arguments are given
logos cannot be applied. The writer has used personal experience hence
no credible source is required so no ethos as well.
Positive and Negative points: The positive point about this article is
that it has evoked feelings of empathy and care and will influence the
reader. It might motivate them to spend more time with their friends and
family. In my opinion it had no negative impact.
Topic relevancy: The topic is relevant to the story as just how writer's
father always supported her daughter and was her strength. She wants to
do the same for her daughter, always encouraging her to pursue her
dreams. This is further justified at the last line as it is mentioned ' It is
my turn now'
Achievement of purposes: The author did achieve the purpose as it hooked the reader from start to end, keeping them entertained and motivating them to appreciate life.
