Gaokao Exam
Higher education admission test
WHAT IS?
The National College Entrance Examination
Gaokao Exam
The National University Entrance Examination, commonly known as the Gaokao Exam, is a standardized university
entrance examination held annually in China.
It is required for admission to almost all higher education institutions at the bachelor's level.
This exam is carried out by students in their third and last year of senior high school, but the age requirement was
abolished in 2001.

The exams last about nine hours over a period of two or three days,
depending on the province in which it is held.

SUBJECTS
Chinese language and mathematics are included in all
tests. Candidates can choose a subject from among
English, French, Japanese, Russian, German or Spanish
for the foreign language part.
In most regions, students must also choose between a
social sciences or a natural sciences orientation.
Students who choose the social sciences must
demonstrate their knowledge of history, political
science and geography, while those who choose the
natural sciences, of physics, chemistry and biology.
IMPORTANCE AND JUSTICE

The gaokao is of great importance in Chinese culture.

For young people and their families it means the possibility of social ascension or stability.
This exam is considered one of the fairest tools for society. Since it doesn't matter what
family you come from, what sports you did or what instrument you play, it is based only on
the knowledge of the students.
However, in recent years this has been called into question due to the unequal distribution of
academic resources among the various provinces that make up China. That is why the
inhabitants of big cities, like Beijing, have access to educational institutions of a higher
standard than rural provinces like Hebai. That's why the boys don't really start from the
same base.
Due to this reason, in 2003 the unification of the exam for the entire country was
abandoned, and 14 provinces began to carry out their own version of the exam.

Children begin to prepare from a very
young age. Usually most kids start taking
extracurricular classes from kindergarten
until the day of the test. That is why it is
estimated that an average student in China
studies around 13 hours a day, taking into
account the hours in and out of school.
These extra classes allow students to
quickly advance their studies and prepare
more effectively for the Gaokao.

THE RACE

BEST
UNIVERSITIES
Before students take the Gaokao exam,
they must submit a formulary specifying
which Universities they would apply to if
they obtain one of the best results in the
exam.
When it comes to informing students
about their performance, China's top
universities have already reserved the top
students for themselves.

SUICIDE °
The main problem of demanding education
SUICEDE: A way to scape
As it has been said before, this test is of great importance. Because of this, students receive great
pressure from their families and society.
This has led to the percentage of youth suicides in recent decades being more associated with Gaokao
than with any other issue.
This is a situation that puts many of the students to the limit, to the point that in 2014 anti-suicide
barriers had to be installed in some centers to prevent students from ending their lives, as happened in
a school in Hebai, which put up fences on the windows of the students' rooms after two of them
jumped into the void in the months before the ‘Gaokao' was held.
As the Chinese Blue Book of Education published in 2014 revealed, 93% of the 79 student suicides
were related to pressure from parents and teachers to get good grades. That these extremes are
reached says a lot about the configuration of the Chinese educational system and its society, since
these cases not only occur among those who are about to take the exam at 18 years old, but also at a
much younger age. In July 2016, a boy threw himself into traffic after arguing with his mother about
homework.
