Evolution of Washing Machine
• In the early days, cleaning clothes was done on hard rocks or scrubbing them in
rivers or lakes.
• On 20th April 1797, the scrub board or washboard was invented.
• On 21st Dec 1851, James King discovered the 1st hand-powered washing machine.
In 1908, The Thor machine with electricity was invented.
• By the early 1950s, Washing machines with spin-dry features were produced. In
1951, the 1st automatic ones appeared.
• In 1958, the first microchip-controlled automatic washing machine was produced.
• In 2007, Sanyo introduced the first drum washing machine with "air wash".
• In 2008, virtually the waterless washing machine was invented by the University of
Leeds. And now, the Washing machine is controlled via your smartphone.
