Environmental Issues in the
Philippines
 Pollution
Refers to the presence pollutants in
the environment which destroy its
condition and could harm the people
who live here.
Air Pollution According to the
World Health
Organization
(WHO), the
Philippines has the
third-lowest air
quality in the Asia-
Pacific region for the
year 2018.
Due to the high
number of vehicles
emitting dark
smoke, smoke
emitted by factories,
and the burning of
matter or fuel which
creates and carries
out chemical
processes and
releasing polluted
smoke.
Water Pollution
Water pollution
is one of the
environmental
issues
experienced in
the Philippines.
Chemical
contaminants
carried by
industrial wastes
kill a lot of smaller
aquatic
organisms, such
as frogs, fish,
tadpoles, etc.
Oil spills that
introduce
unhealthy
amounts of oil
into the marine
environment also
make marine
animals sick and
lead to their
unnatural deaths.
Dumping solid
trash such as
plastic, metallic
scrap, garbage,
etc., may block
aquatic channels,
and can also cause
small animals to
get trapped in the
debris.
 According to the Philippine
Environment Monitor (PEM) and the
Environmental Management Bureau
(EMB) for the year 2018, the regions
of NCR, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA,
Central Luzon, and Central Visayas
have the lowest water quality in the
country.
Soil pollution is a major
environmental issue in the country.
 According to a study by the Solid Waste
Management Office of the MMDA, less
than half of Metro Manila’s entire waste.
The large portion of the region’s waste is
simply scattered or piled up in the wrong
place.
 Apart from waste, excessive use of
pesticides and artificial fertilizers also
contribute to soil pollution.

Animals and plants decrease in number
due to their reckless capture by humans.
Illegal cutting and illegal fishing is still
widespread in the Philippines.
The destruction of highlands brought by
illegal mining causes depletion and
destruction of the country’s natural
resources.
Affected Effects Brought by Illegal
Places Mining

Air Some mines emit methane. It is a

greenhouse gas that worsens global
warming.
Water The chemicals used in mining sites can
leak into water sources especially those
found underground.

Soil Illegal mining can cause landslides.

Excavated land that did not yield
minerals cannot be used.
Ecosystem The habitat of animals and
plants are destroyed in places
that are made into mining sites.
Communitie Farmlands and lands where
s near people live vanish.

Care and Management of the
Resources of the Philippines
The Department of Environment and
Natural Resources or DENR is the main
agency that oversees the country’s natural
resources.
The agency aims to:
1. Ensure the availability and preservation of
natural resources of the country by using them
wisely and by replacing them, especially by
planting trees to replace those which were cut
2. Increase the production from resources to
meet the needs of the country’s growing
population.
3. Increase the contribution of these natural
resources to achieve economic and social
development.
4. Ensure equal opportunity for everyone to
benefit from the natural resources of the
country.
5. Protect and preserve the landforms and
bodies of water of the country for the future
generations.
