What is
Mental Health?

According to WHO

“Mental health is a state of mental well-being


that enables people to cope with the stresses of
life, realize their abilities, learn well and work
well, and contribute to their community.”
Types of approaches to mental
health therapy
• Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Therapies
(Examines significant patterns and past events
• Behavior therapy: Changes behavior through
observation and use of proper reinforcements
• Cognitive therapy: Identifies and changes
destructive thought patterns
• Humanistic therapy: Emphasizes the person as a
whole
• Integrative therapy: Introduces strategies from 2 or
more types of therapy
Behavior Therapy
Behaviorism
Its a learning theory based on the idea , that behavior can be controlled and modified
based on the consequences of a behavior.

• learning occurs by copying others.


• learning occurs by repetition.

Types of Conditioning in Behavior Therapy

• Classical conditioning
• Operant conditioning
What is Conditioning ?
"A process of behavior modification by which a subject comes to
associate a desired behavior with a previously unrelated stimulus is
called conditioning."
Classical Conditioning

A type of learning in which an organism learns to connect or associate


stimuli. ( pavlov theory )
Operant conditioning
Operant conditioning is an association made between a behavior and a
consequence for that behavior. ( B. F skinner theory)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

• combines cognitive therapy and behavioral therapy to form a more holistic


approach.

• The emphasis is on understanding the


connection between thoughts,
emotions, and actions, and developing
a more balanced perspective and
response.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
(DBT)
teaches skills that improve emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and
distress tolerance. It also incorporates mindfulness.
Rational Emotive Therapy
Rational emotive therapy prioritizes recognizing and challenging dysfunctional
thought patterns. A principle of this treatment is the idea that how a person views
and interprets events can shape their emotions and behavior.

Exposure Therapy
an evidence-based treatment geared toward showing patients that their fears can
be managed. Upon identifying situations or events that cause psychological
distress,
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
• This method is rooted in meditative practices and may incorporate cognitive
behavioral therapy. It emphasizes mindfulness, or the ability to be aware and in
the present.

Mindfulness Techniques
Mindfulness-based therapy techniques may include:
• Deep breathing exercises
• Meditation
• Visualization
• Guided imagery
