CIRCULATORY
SYSTEM
Circulatory System
• The circulatory system is
the life support structure that
nourishes your cells with
nutrients from the food you
eat and the oxygen from the
air you breathe
• Also known as
cardiovascular system

Activity 1. Crossword Puzzle: Circulatory
System
Complete the crossword puzzle below with the given first letter of each word.
Major Parts of The Circulatory
System Heart, Blood Vessel, and Blood
THE HEART
• The heart is made of
specialized cardiac muscle
tissue that allows it to act as a
pump within the circulatory
system.
• It is divided into four
chambers: two atria and two
ventricles.
THE HEART
• The average heart beats
approximately 72 times each
minute.
• It weighs nine to eleven
ounces in females and just an
ounce or two more in males.
• In your lifetime, your heart will
beat approximately 2.5 billion
times.
THE BLOOD VESSELS
• It is a vessel in the human
body in which blood
circulates.
• Arteries- carries oxygen-rich
blood away from the heart
and into the various organs
of the body
• Veins- carries deoxygenated
blood toward the heart.
• Capillaries- smallest type of
blood vessel.
THE BLOOD
• There are four basic
components that comprise
human blood: plasma, red
blood cells, white blood
cells and platelets.
The Different Types of Circulation
Pulmonary Circulation, Coronary Circulation, and Systemic
Circulation
The Different Types of Circulation
Pulmonary circulation is a circuit that provides blood flow from
the heart to the lungs; and back to the heart.
The Different Types of Circulation
Coronary circulation is a circuit that strictly provides blood to the tissues
of the heart.
The Different Types of Circulation
Systemic circulation is a circuit that allows blood to flow from
the heart to the rest of the body; excluding the lungs.

1. Oxygen poor blood travels through the inferior or superior
vena cava.
2. Deoxygenated blood enters the right atrium.
3. Blood passes through the tricuspid valve.
4. Blood enters the right ventricle.
5. Blood moves through the pulmonary valve.
6. Blood enters the pulmonary trunk and arteries where the
blood is carried to the lungs.
7. Blood loses Carbon Dioxide and gains oxygen in the
pulmonary capillaries
8. The oxygenated blood enters the pulmonary veins.
9. Blood enters the left atrium.
10. Blood travels through the mitral/bicuspid valve.
11. Blood enters the left ventricle.
12. Blood moves through the aortic valve.
13. Blood travels through the aorta and systemic arteries.
14. Blood loses oxygen and gains carbon dioxide in the
systemic capillaries
