Spirit Bear
Countries the animal
can be found in
• The Kermode bear, sometimes called the spirit bear
is a subspecies of the American black bear and lives
in the Central and North Coast regions of British
Columbia, Canada.
• They are not polar bears or albinos.
Habitat
• Kermode bears prefer British
Columbia's old-growth coastal
rainforest. These bears have
thrived on two isolated islands
off B.C.'s North Coast, Princess
Royal and Gribbell, which are
home to the largest Kermode
population.
• Spirit bears can also be found
in the Great Bear Rainforest.
Diet
• Spirit bears are omnivores. They
eat berries, fruits, roots, grasses
and other plants, insects, deer
and salmon. Most of all, they
love eating salmon.

• Interesting fact: Spirit bears have

advantage over other bears when
catching salmon, because of their
white color, they can blend into
daylight.
Population
• Current population estimates are
under review and vary from 50 to 150
individuals.
Why is the Spirit
bear endangered?
• Even though Spirit bears were
protected from hunting during
the 1950,they still face several
threats such has habitat loss
from logging, decline in salmon
stocks and they still get
pressured from hunters. To stop
this we must stop black bear
hunting in small areas where
there's a high concentration of
spirit bears, because spirit
bears are also considered a
subspecies of black bear.
Why should we stop hunting
the spirit bears?

• Right now, there are only 50 and 150 individuals

of spirit bear still roaming the rainforest of British
Colombia, Canada. If the Spirit Bear's ecosystem
can be protected, salmon, birds, wolves, deer,
grizzly bears, insects, and many other species
dependent on the Great Bear Rainforest
ecosystem will be conserved and protected as
well. They contribute to the ecosystems by carry
salmon carcasses to the forest and providing the
forest with nutrients from the ocean to the trees.
Interesting Facts
• Spirit bears can run up to 55 km per hour
• Spirit bears are rare white- or cream-coated black bears
• When they're not hibernating and there are no salmon
around, spirit bears eat a variety of foods including fruits,
berries, nuts, grasses, roots, other plants, insects, fawns
and carrion.
• White bears are the most successful bears in catching
salmon in the day because of their pale white akin it is
difficult for the salmon to notice them.
• Due to their white coat, they often give off a ghostly
appearance, and hence, termed as spirit bears.
