Warm-up
Ask your teacher or any of your classmates something you
would like to know about them. Use the structures we’ve
covered lately. If your question is wrong, then you have to
answer it!
Look at the following examples:

● You haven’t seen Lisa, have you?

● It was a good film, wasn’t it?

“Have you?” and “wasn’t it?” are question tags.

4
Question Tags

They are formed using auxiliary verbs (do, be, have, etc.) or a
modal.

Examples:
● Helen lives here, doesn’t she?
● You are French, aren’t you?
● You haven’t paid, have you??

6
Question Tags

Look at the tense of the following examples:

● You left early, didn’t you?

● Jack was born in Italy, wasn’t he?
● Alice went to the mall during quarantine, didn’t she?
● Sebastian started playing Animal Crossing, didn’t he?
● You were watching anime, weren’t you?

What happens with tense in question tags?

7
Question Tags

● We use a negative question tag after a positive sentence:

Kate will be here soon, won’t she?

Joe should pass the exam, shouldn’t he?
● And a positive question tag after a negative sentence:

Kate won’t be late, will she?

You haven’t eaten yet, have you?

8
Question Tags

● It is possible for a positive tag to follow a positive

statement, but it is less common:

So you like working here, do you?

This is used to express interest, or ask for confirmation.

9
Intonation

● If the intonation of the question tag rises it is a genuine question:

They went to the cinema, didn’t they?

Yes, they went to see the latest premiere.

● If the intonation of the question tag falls you are inviting the
listener to agree with you:
She doesn’t look really well, does she?
No, she looks extremely tired.

10
Question Tags

● You can use a negative sentence + positive tag to ask for

things or information, or to ask for a favour. The intonation
rises in sentences like these:
You haven’t got a pen, have you? Yes, here you are.

You couldn’t do me a favour, could you? Not really, I’m busy.

You don’t know where Karen is, do you? Sorry, I have no idea.

11
Question Tags

● After Let’s…, the question tag is shall we?:

Let’s go for a walk, shall we?
● After Don’t…, the question tag is will you?:

Don’t drive too fast, will you?

● After I’m…, the negative question tag is aren’t I?:

I’m fantastic, aren’t I?
