I. THE KINGDOM OF GOD
I. In the Old Testament
“ King” is used symbolically to signify the
possessor of supreme power (Prov.8: 15-16).
• God as the sole proper sovereign and
ruler of the universe (1 Tim. 1: 17),
• to Christ as the sole head and governor
of his church ( Jn. 1:49),
• to men as invested with regal authority by
others (1 Tim.2:1-2)
• The people of God are called kings and priests.
(Rev. 1:6).
GOD as King

• On the day that Samuel presented Saul to

Israel as their first king, he recalled sadly “ you
said to me, “no, we want a king to rule over
us” even though the Lord your God was your
King ( 1 Sam. 12:12).
• Samuel affirmed that God had committed
himself to personally provide the judicial,
legislative, executive and military leadership
that his people needed. But God was invisible
and the enemies that surrounded Israel were
all too visible. God was overly rejected.
Israel demanded a ruler they could see.
They would rely on a human being rather
than on the Lord.
II. Kingdom in the OT
• In the OT, “kingdom” is best expressed by the
idea of reign or sovereignty.
• The Bible does speak of God’s kingdom in two
significant ways:
1. The entire universe is God’s kingdom for
the exercise sovereign rule over all things
(Psalm 103:19, NKJV) (Exo.15:18) (Dan. 4:3)
2. The OT does look forward to a future
expression of God’s – now disguised
sovereignty, then the kingdom will have a
visible earthly form ( Daniel 2:44) , OT
prophecy consistently pictures a time when
earth will be ruled by the Messiah, when “the
kingdom will be the Lord’s (Ob.21)
III. Kingdom in the NT

• A kingdom is realm in which a king exerts

control and authority.
• The “kingdom of God” rather than being a
place, is the realm in which God is in control.
IV. What the Kingdom of GOD is
…not a territory over which he reigns
…not by a geographic location
…not an era of existence or
… the nationality of people
but
… the SOVEREIGN RULE AND
AUTHORITY OF GOD
• The person who seeks God’s kingdom seeks
God’s rule in his life (Mt. 6:33)
• The person who receives God’s kingdom
receives God’s rule in his life (Mk. 10:15)
• The prayer for God’s kingdom to come is a
prayer that his rule be accepted, so that His
Will is done on earth as it is in heaven
(Mt.6:10)
• The person who enters the KOG enters the
realm where he accepts God’s rule (Mt.21:31)
• The world at present is in a state of rebellion
against God’s rule, because it is under the
power of Satan (2 Cor. 4:4) (1 Jn. 5:19)
• As Jesus proclaimed the kingdom…he gave
evidence of His power over Satan
(Mt.4:23-24)
• His deliverance of people from the bondage of
Satan was proof that God’s kingdom had
come among them (Mt.12:28) (Mk.1:27) (Lk.
10:9, 17-18)
• All people experience (or one day will) the
sovereign authority of God, either in blessing
or in judgment (Mt.12:28) (Rev. 11:15, 18)
(Rev. 19: 15-16)
• Because John the Baptist announced the
coming of the kingdom of Jesus, he brought to
a close the pre- kingdom era (Mt.3:2)
(Lk. 16:16)
• Even the most insignificant person in the new
era enjoys blessings that the greatest person in
the former era never knew ( Mt. 11:11)
