Microscope
Learning Goals and Standards

• Identify parts of the

microscope and their
functions
Objectives:
• Identify parts of the microscope and
their functions
• Enumerate the importance of
microscope
• Appreciate the importance of each
part of the microscope
Introduction
Microscope, instrument that
produces enlarged images of small
objects, allowing the observer an
exceedingly close view of minute
structures at a scale convenient for
examination and analysis.

Importance of Microscope
What is a microscope?
• A laboratory
equipment used
to magnify small
things that are
invisible to the
naked eye.
Why are microscope important?
• Microscopes in Medicine
- In 1860s Louis Pasteur
reported that the
microscopic organisms he
saw in the microscope
caused certain diseases.
- Pasteur’s germ theory
revolutionized the process
of identifying, treating and
preventing infectious
diseases
Why are microscope important?
• Microscopes in
Education
- Microscopes are used to
teach students about
the structure of things
too small to be seen
with the human eye
alone
Why are microscope important?
• Investigating With
Microscopes
- Forensic
scientists examine blood,
dust, fibers and other
trace materials at a crime
scene to help prosecute
criminals. Environmental
scientists examine soil
and water samples
Why are microscope important?
• Investigating With
Microscopes
- Geneticists observe
chromosomes for defects.
In engineering, material
scientists use microscopes
to inspect the
components of structures
such as buildings, bridges
and dams to ensure that
they are safe
Parts of Microscope
Parts of a Microscope
1. Eyepiece
- Magnifies
objects 10x or
15x

2. Tube
- Connects the
eyepiece to the
objective
lenses

3. Objective Lenses
- three or four objective lenses
are found on a microscope,
with ranges of 10X, 40X, 100X
powers. Lenses are color
coded, the shortest lens is of
the low power objective, and
the longest lens is high power
objective lenses

4. Base
- Provides
basal support
for the
microscope

5. Arm
- supports the
tube of the
microscope and
connects to the
base of the
microscope

6. Revolving
Nosepiece
- Holds two or
more objective
lenses and rotates
in order to change
power
Parts of a Microscope
7. Stage
- platform that is
flat used for
placing the slides
under observation
Parts of a Microscope
8. Stage clip
- hold the
slides in proper
place
Parts of a Microscope
9. Coarse
Adjustment
Knob
- Moves the
body tube up
and down
Parts of a Microscope
10. Fine
Adjustment Knob
- Moves the body
tube slightly to
sharpen the image
Parts of a Microscope
11. Condenser
Lens
- Focuses the
light onto the
specimen
Parts of a Microscope
12. Diaphragm/Iris
- helps in controlling
the amount of light
that is passing
through the opening
of the stage.

13. Mirror
- Reflects light
to the lens of
the microscope
