Assessment Strategies for Mathematics

in the Primary Grades

Traditional Assessment
Traditional Assessment
Conventional methods of
testing, usually standardized
and use pen and paper with
multiple-choice, true or false
or matching type test items.
Types of Traditional
Assessments
1
True or False Tests
 Which the students are asked to
make judgement whether the factual
statement is either True or False.

 Assessing the surface level of

knowledge of the students, however,
this can be crafted in such a way
that the students critical thinking
skills are utilized since it can assess
higher order thinking skills.
2
Multiple Choice Tests

 Used to test factual recall, levels

of understanding, and ability to
apply learning (analyzing and
evaluating).

 This test can also provide an

excellent pre-assessment indicator
of student knowledge as well as a
source for a post-test discussion.
3
Matching Type Tests
 Used when you need to assess the
knowledge gained from a course that
features a lot of dates, names, places,
and events.

 This test also provides a way for learners

to connect a word, sentence or phrase in
one column to a corresponding word,
sentence or phrase in a second column.

 The items in the first column are called

premises and the answers in the second
column are the responses.
4
Fill-in the Blank Test

 Which the exam items

contain statements which you
must complete by inserting
information into blank spaces.
5
Essays
 Which the test item requires a
response composed by the
examinee, usually in the form of
one or more sentences, of a
nature that no single response or
pattern of responses can be listed
as correct, and the accuracy and
quality of which can be judged
subjectively only by one skilled or
informed in the subject.
