Thomas Hobbes View on Freedom
It is the idea that freedom means an ability to do
what one wants, without external obstacles. This
concept has been called too simplistic for
discounting the importance of individual self-
realization. Positive liberty is the ability to fulfill one's
purposes.
Social Contact Theory
•  The method of justifying political principles or arrangements
by appeal to the agreement that would be made among
suitably situated rational, free, and equal persons.
• He used the social contract method to arrive at the astonishing
conclusion that we ought to submit to the authority of an
absolute—undivided and unlimited—sovereign power.
LAW OF
NATURE
• The first law of nature tells us to seek peace.

• The second law of nature tells us to lay down our rights in

order to seek peace, provided that this can be done safely.

• The third law of nature tells us to keep our covenants,

where covenants are the most important vehicle through
which rights are laid down.
FREEDOM AND
When the POWER
impediments to motion are external, then an entity is said to
lack freedom. But when the impediments to motion are internal, an entity
is said to lack power. The fact that a stone cannot move of its own accord
does not mean that it lacks the freedom to move; rather, it lacks the power
(or ability) to move. Likewise, if a sick man is confined to a bed and
unable to move about, he lacks not the freedom to walk (since
no external impediments prevent him from walking) but the power to walk.
