Project Title

Production of 100 tons/day terephthalic acid by bio p-xylene from catalytic fast pyrolysis of rice
straw.
Problem Statement

As we know that the Terephthalic acid demand is increasing day by day. For this we are
importing its raw material from other countries. For that purpose here we deal with

1. Minimize the load

2. Generate revenue

3. Environmental Regulations

 Eduard Karakhanov, A. M. (2019). Manganese and cobalt doped hierarchical mesoporous halloysite based
catalyst for selective oxidation of p-xylene to terephthalic acid . Catalysts , 15
Aims & Objective

To design a

i. Economical

ii.Highly efficient

iii.Ecofriendly process

For the production of Terephthalic acid.

Literature Review

Terephthalic acid was first isolated (from turpentine) by the French chemist Amédée Cailliot
(1805–1884) in 1846. Terephthalic acid became industrially important after World War II.
Terephthalic acid was produced by oxidation of p-xylene with dilute nitric acid.

R. ogerio A. F. tomas, J. C. (2012). p-xylene oxidation to terephthalic acid:

A literature review oriented towards process optimization and development
Literature Review
Following are the states for the production and consumption of terephthalic acid in Pakistan.

Terephthalic Acid Tons per Year Global Ranked

Production 500,000 72nd in the world

Consumption 9,11,000 approx 28th in the world

The deficit of PTA is - 4, 11,000 tons per year. That is why we are choosing 45,000bpd capacity
plant which will cover a part of this deficit in future.
Methodology

 In the production of terephthalic acid , we started from rice straw (biomass) and with the
help of fluidization. After fluidization of this bio-oil we extracted BTX. From the BTX we
separated out the xylene and from the xylene we wanted p-xylene isomer. This p-xylene
isomer is separated by crystallization.

 This p-xylene is oxidized to produce terephthalic acid. The process that we used is Amoco
process.
Fig 1
Expected Outcomes

 The final products will be terephthalic acid . It will a cover a part of acid that will not cost us
import duties for importing raw material. It will obviously economical.
