• British writer and Physician.
• Created a character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for study in Scarlet.
• First four novel and 56 short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson.

• Collection of 12 short stories .
• Written by Arthur Canon.
• 1st published on 14 Oct. 1892.
• Stories in THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES
identify and try to correct, social injustice.
“INTRODUCTION TO DR. WATSON”

• Full name is John H. Watson.


• Holmes’ friend, assistant and flatmate.
• A fictional character in Sherlock Holmes.
• 1st appearance in the novel “A Study in Scarlet”(1887).
• Last appearance in “ The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place(1927).
• Described as a classical Victorian-era gentleman.
• Appeared in various films, TV series, video games and radio programs.
“WATSON AS HOLMES'S BIOGRAPHER”

• At the end of the first published Holmes story, ”A Study in Scarlet “, Watson is so
incensed by Scotland Yard’s claiming full credits for its solution that he exclaims: ”yours
merits should be publicly recognized.yu should publish an account of the case”.
• In 1st chapter of “The Sign of Four” Holmes comments on Watson’s first effort as a
biographer.
• In “The Adventure of Silver Blaze”, Holmes confesses,” I made a blunder, my dear
Watson –which is ,I am afraid, a more common occurrence that anyone would think who
only knew me through your memoirs”.

• Watson has total control over the arrangements of who says what and when.
• But Holmes tales are heavy on dialogue and even more importantly , they contain
lengthy testimony from other characters, often inflected with the accent of those
characters

• Describe as” thin as a lath and brown as a nut” in Scarlet.


• Describe as” strongly built with a thick strong neck and a small moustache”.
• Watson used to be an athlete: It is mentioned in “The Adventures of the Sussex
