Types of stress :
 tensile stress .
 compressive stress .
 shear stress .
 torsional shear stress .
 crushing stress .
 Bearing stress .
 Bending stress.
1- Tensile stress :

 Because of Pull type of loading , the stress

developed in the material is called as
Tensile-stress .
2- Compressive stress :
 Because of Push-type of loading , stress ,
developed in the material is compressive
stress .
3-Shear stress :
 In case of shear stress the load is
tangential to the cross-section area .
 Shear may be single shear or double
shear .
4- Torsional shear stress
 Torsional shear stress is seen in members
which are rotating .
5-Crushing stress :

 It is a localized stress acting on a

member irrespective and the type of
loading crushing is also local
compression .
 The area which undergoes crushing
is the Projected area
6-Bearing stress :
 It most frequently seen in those members
which are continuously rotating .

 Bearing area

 Bearing stress = bearing load / bearing

area
7- -Bending Stress :
 It is the stress developed in a
member because of Bending load
 Bending stress calculated by using :
Strength of materials ( SOM ) :
It is the internal resistance to the external
loading
It is defined as the ratio of external load to
the cross sectional area
strain:
 Is defined as the deformation to the external
loading.
 It also be defined as the relation of chang in
length to the original length .
