INTRODUCTION

• This presentation discusses the rococo. To begin with Asymmetry, scrolling curves,
gilding, white and pastel colors, carved molding, and frescoes combine to produce
surprise and the appearance of motion and drama in Rococo architecture, art, and
decorating. It is frequently referred to as the culmination of the Baroque movement.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF ROCOCO ART

• Soft hues and curving lines characterize Rococo artwork, which began in early 18th century Paris.
The word "rococo" comes from the French term rocaille, which means "rubble or rock." Following
Louis XIV's death, the French court relocated from Versailles to their old Parisian homes.

THE PERIOD OF ROCOCO

• The most crucial debate of the time – color vs drawing – was handled by the Rococo art
style. Attention to detail, decoration, and the use of vibrant colors were increasingly
important to artists throughout this time period. It originated in 1699, when King Louis
XIV of France commanded that more young art be produced. A move away from the
austere religious symmetrical patterns of the Baroque characterized Rococo furniture and
architecture.
• Between the 17th and the 18th centuries, Rococo art was very popular. Artists of the time
began to incorporate more playfulness into their work. Portraiture was fashionable, and
canvases were covered with cherubs and love tales.

THE ROCOCO MOVEMENT: JEAN
ANTOINE WATTEAU, 1684 – 1721

• Jean Antoine Watteau is regarded as the founding

father of Rococo art. His work is credited with
reviving the Baroque period. He painted FG 6: The Embarkation for Cythera
romantic, cheerful pictures of people dancing in a
lovely setting. This visual spawned a new genre
called fêtes galantes.

FG 8: The Toilette FG 9: Les Champs-Elysées FG 10: Venetian Pleasures
ROCOCO INFLUENCES

• Rococo painting was predominantly affected by the Venetian School's use of color,
sensual motifs, and Arcadian landscapes, while Rococo interior design was largely
influenced by the School of Fontainebleau.
THE VENETIAN SCHOOL

• Most academics now consider Giorgione's Pastoral

Concert (c. 1509) to be one of Titian's early
masterpieces. When it was first added to the Louvre's
collection, it was designated as a Fête champêtre, or
outdoor party. Two naked women and two aristocratic
men play music in an imagined pastoral environment in
a Renaissance work

SCHOOL OF FONTAINEBLEAU 1528-1630

• Rosso Florentino, an Italian painter, was invited to the

French court by King Francis I in 1530. Rosso formed
the School of Fontainebleau, a forerunner of French
Mannerism's courtly style. Large stucco reliefs with
ornamental and gilded themes were used as frames for
the first time at the school.
FG 12: The case of FG 13: Rosso Florentino's The
this pendule en cartel, or Royal Elephant (c. 153-159) is
wall clock, (c. 1740- one of his many paintings in
1745) was designed by the Château de Fontainebleau
Charles Cressent for a gallery that employ stucco
clock made by Jean relief to create an ornate
Godde l'aîné. overall effect.
