General data

 Earth (also called Earth or "Blue Planet") is the

third planet from the Sun and the largest of the
Earth's solar planets, both in mass and
diameter. It is the only celestial body known to
harbor life. About 29.2% of the Earth's surface is
a land of continents and islands. The remaining
70.8% is covered by water, mostly by oceans,
seas, bays and other bodies of salt water, but
also by lakes, rivers and other freshwater,
which together constitute the hydrosphere.
Curiosities
 1. The Earth's core contains so much gold that it would be enough to
cover the entire surface of our planet by almost 45 centimeters.
 2. The gravity of the Earth at the poles is greater than at the
equator. A person who weighs 68.4 kg at the North Pole will weigh
400 grams less at the equator.
 3. Over 68% of the Earth's fresh water is solid, including glaciers,
snow cover and permafrost.
 4. The Earth was first photographed from space in 1959 by the
Explorer-6 camera. The first image of the entire Earth was taken by
Lunar Orbiter V on August 8, 1967.
 5.Earth is the only planet that has not been named after the
mythological gods. All seven other planets in the solar system are
named after ancient Roman gods or goddesses. In English, our planet
is called Earth, a name that comes from Old English, in which the
word "ertha" means earth.
Curiosities

 The boundary between the planet's atmosphere and space is called the
Karman Line. It is located 100 kilometers above sea level
 Earth is the densest planet, ranking fifth in the Solar System in size. The most
abundant chemical elements on our planet are iron (about 32%), oxygen
(about 30%) and silicon (about 15%).
 For now, Earth is the only astronomical body on which life exists. A decade
ago, it was estimated that there are about 8.7 million species of listed
creatures (6.5 million on land, 2.2 million in water).
 The Earth's magnetic field acts as a shield against incessant bombardment by
solar particles. This field stretches from the core of the Earth to the limit
where the solar wind meets.
Earth Day

 Every year, April 22 is Earth Day, the day the

environmental movement was born. "This movement was
born in the United States at a time when several special
events were taking place, including the stifling of a
student revolt against the Cambodian war, the May 4
Massacre, the emergence of fiber optics, the success of
the song." Bridge over Troubled Water, Beatles' latest
album, Jimi Hendrix's Death considered a "sign of
prosperity". The environment has started to be talked
about more and more often.
