Introduction
• Why was Muhammad Bin Qasim ordered to invade Sindh?
• It was because when two previous Umayyad commanders had not
been successful in punishing Sindh's ruler Raja Dahir for his failure
to prevent pirates from disrupting Muslim shipping off the coast of
Sindh ...
• When did Muhammad Bin Qasim Invade Sindh?
• Muhammad Bin Qasim invaded Sindh at 712 AD
What Did Muhammad Bin Qasim Leave With
To Capture Sindh?
• Muhammad bin Qasim led a well equipped army of six thousand cavalry
six thousand camel riders, reinforcements and siege engines such as
catapults into Sindh. As he won battle after battle the size of his forces
grew as men from miles around heard of his successes and
joined his forces.
The First Enemy Town…
• Muhammad Bin Qasim attacked Daibal. The port town of Daibal near
modern Karachi has an interesting history. Its importance owes much to
its location as a port city that connected Central Asia with the western
Indian coast and Arabia. Trade defined this part of Sindh then just as much
as it does today. The sailors from this region were respected throughout
the eastern world for their skill and courage.
The Attack On Sindh…
• In 711 his army confronted the forces of the Hindu ruler Raja Dahir near
Rohri. Sources from the time tell us that the two armies were roughly
equal in size, but the battle was brief and the result was a decisive Muslim
victory. However, Raja Dahir was not a popular ruler, and many of his
Buddhist subjects did not support him in the battle. Raja Dahir was killed
in the battle and Muhammad bin Qasim became the first Muslim
conqueror of Sindh.
The Reign Of Muhammad Bin Qasim
On Sindh…
• He attempted to establish law and order in the newly conquered territory
by showing religious tolerance and integrating the ruling classes into his
new government. His rule over Sindh was successful but brief. The Arab
army he led was very small compared to the Indian armies that guarded
the southern borders of the subcontinent. During his reign as Governor of
Sindh, Muhammad bin Qasim treated the conquered peoples with dignity
and allowed them to continue to worship as they had always done.
