Comparison of volume of copper used for different

systems of transmission of power (Maximum

voltage between two outer conductors)
(underground cable)
 The following assumptions are made for comparison:
1- The power transmitted over all the system is same (Ptransmitted =
constant).
2- The distance over which the power is transmitted is same (Length =
constant).
3- The power losses in all the systems are same (PLoss = constant).

4- The maximum voltage between the two conductors is same (Emax =

constant).

30,000 kW at power factor 0.8 lagging is being transmitted over a 220 kV three-
phase transmission line. The length of the line is 275 km, and the total losses are
10% of the transmitted power. Calculate the weight of copper used and also
calculate the weight of copper had the power been transmitted over a single-
phase transmission line for the same line voltage and losses. Assume that the
resistance of 1 km long conductor and 1 cm2 cross-section is 0.173 ohm and
specific gravity of copper is 8.9.
