 Piezoelectric effect

• Some materials have special Piezoelectric properties

• Compression of a material generates a polarity

• The charge polarity is then used as potential difference

• The voltage can then be measured by a voltmeter

 Materials that display the piezoelectric effect
• Quartz is the most basic material

 Other material include: PE ceramis, PE crystals, PE polymers

History

• The word “Piezoelectricity” comes

from the Greek words meaning
“pressure electricity”.
• It was discovered in 1880 by Pierre
and Jacques Curie.
• The discovery of piezoelectricity
gained interest in 1900’s.
• After world war 1 research on
Piezoelectricity accelerated
 Basic pressure sensor design

• PE crystal and a metal plate

• Both plates joined together
• Upon compression
• +ve C accumulates on middle plate (Crystal)
• -ve C accumulates on metal plate
• Can sense basic things (for example a
hit with a hammer)
• NOT practical

Integrated Electronics Piezo-Electric (IEPE)
• The flaw with PE transducers is that the crystal has a very high
impedance which causes a loading effect on our circuit
• To solve this problem, we need to convert the high impedance and
low current signal to a low impedance and voltage dependent signal
