OPTICAL FIBER SENSOR

INTRODUCTION:
 The fiber optic sensor has an optical fiber connected to a
light source to allow for detection in tight spaces or where a
small profile is beneficial.
 These are reliable and easy-to-use devices than that have
high power, can automatically adjust to real-time
conditions, and have a straightforward display that
eliminates any guesswork.
WORKING

 Theoptical fiber consists of the core and the

cladding, which have different refractive indexes.
 Thelight beam travels through the core by
repeatedly bouncing off the wall of the cladding.
APPLICATIONS

FOLLOWING ARE SOME MAIN APPLICATIONS OF A FIBER

OPTIC SENSOR.

 Measurement of physical properties such as temperature,

displacement, velocity, strain in structures of any size or
any shape
  This ability to multiplex typically up to a few hundred
interrogation points is another defining feature of fiber optic
sensors.

ADVANTAGES & DRAWBACKS
ADVANTAGES:

 Fiber optic sensors offer many advantages over other sensing techniques
 most important, these sensors are immune to electromagnetic pickup and can
be accessed through the fiber links for very long distances—sometimes
extending to tens of kilometers.
 The fibers are also intrinsically safe in hazardous environments.
 they are chemically passive, have small physical dimensions, and are
mechanically compatible with a host of operational environments.
DISADVANTAGE:
 It is very expensive.
 Detection systems may be complex.
 It is unfamiliar to the user and hence it requires basic
training before they start using it.
 It requires precise installation methods or procedures.
 It is complex to develop usable measurement systems
using fiber optic sensors.
CONCLUSIONS

 Fiber optic sensors continue to fascinate. As in other areas

of photonics, researchers are excited about the prospect of
molding new technologies into the sensing and
instrumentation context.
 As every thing in this world is not ideal or perfect but the
advanced world has taken us towards a lot of simplicity and
so have the sensors which play an important role in our life.
