HOW MATH IS INVOLVED IN
BADMINTON
Badminton is a sport with four dimensions. The height , width and length
of the playing space, plus time
From mathematical point of view , the trajectories of a shuttle are a
bunch of mathematical functions
A powerful smash from mid court will have an almost straight trajectoru
represented by a function such as
AX+BY+C=0

A long serve can be represented by

Y=5SinX
DIMENSIONS USED IN BADMINTON
• Badminton Courts have a length of 13.4 m, but double courts
are 6.1 m wide while single courts are reduced to 5.18 m;
shrinking by 0.46 m on both sides. Service courts are split by
a center line dividing the width of the court and are set back
from the net by a short service line of 1.98 m. Doubles games
also require a long service line that is placed 0.76 m in from
the back boundary. Clearances of 0.61 m should be
providing around the entire badminton court.
CASE OF MICHAEL AND SCHWAB
• Michael and Schwab plays badminton
Schwab defeated Michael easily

Now Michael takes the help of mathematics to score a point.

Finally he did it but how?

• A badminton player always keeps the quartz dimensions and his own position In
mind
• Michael sees an open spot and decides to hit there. In this point Michael uses the
Pythagorean theorm to hit the shuttle as far as he can and he also uses his power.
• He quickly calculate in this mind the length and the breadth to get the
hypotenuse.

• 31.2 as a^2
• 16.6 as b^2
• He gets 42.6 as c^2
• Michael is trying to beat schwab. He hit the ball to other side by the diagonal
so he has to calculate how hard he has to hit the ball in order to reach the goal
accurately.

• d= root(l^2+w^2+h^2)
d=root((7^2)+(16.6)^2+(31.2)^2
Which is approximately 36.03

• In this point michale uses his distance away from the net as his radius for his
circumference
• He is standing 17.6 inches away from the net and hits the shuttle in the path of an arc
• Michael calculates the distance and determines his power

• Hence the shuttle is out of the schwab reach and Michael earn his point
• He hits shuttle to 50 to 55.2 feet away

• (slide 11 image blank sheet pe-

• Michael wants to hit the ball so that its at an angle that schwab cant’t
even catch the shuttle easily so that he can get a point from it.
• The length is 13 and height is 7

• tanx=13/7
X is approx. 61 degree

Result
• So Michael has to hit 42.6 feet away which makes schwab lose the
point
