The UK is an island country in the Atlantic Ocean separated from
continental Europe by the La Manche Channel.
It lies in Western Europe.
The Channel separates the UK and France.
Between cities Dover (UK) and Calais (France), a tunnel was dug
under the sea so that today La Manche Channel can be crossed by
rail in 35 minutes.

UK POLITICS

The UK is a parliamentary monarchy and one of the oldest

democracies in the world.
As early as 1215, England became a parliamentary monarchy. Even
then, the Magna Carta Libertarum (some kind of constitution) limited
the absolute power of the king.
Today, the power of the king is almost reduced to a minimum, and the
UK is ruled by the parliament and the executive government. The
prime minister is the main figure in the UK and the parliament is the
main institution.
Recently, the long-reigning Queen Elizabeth died and now her son
Charles, today King Charles III, became the king.

UK HISTORY
England has had a turbulent history since the time when it was still a Roman
colony.
Throughout its history England was a powerful kingdom and country that
participated in many wars on the territory of Europe, including the Napoleonic
Wars, the First and the Second World War.
However what the UK is most famous for, are its conquests all over the world.
The British were great seamen and, with their ships, they reached almost every
corner of our planet. They colonized the North America, Australia, India and
Africa.
At the height of its power, English empire was called - the empire where the
Sun never sets - since it encompassed almost all geographical meridians and
there was always part of the empire where it was still daylight.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE
The main language spoken in the UK is English.
Thanks to the British conquests and colonies, the English language is
spoken on several continents and that is why it became the lingua
franca of today. It means that it is the language used for
communication between people who do not speak the same
language.
UK CULTURE
The most famous representative of English culture is the famous poet
and playwright from the 17th century, William Shakespeare.
Today he is considered the most important writer in the whole world
who wrote numerous plays that are still read and played in theatres
all over the world - Hamet, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, King Lear,
Much a Do About Nothing.
Very little is known about the life of this so famous writer, so there
are many theories about who William Shakespeare was and wheather
that was just his pseudonym.
Some even believe that the actual persons hiding behind that name
could be a famous philosopher of that time, a nobleman close to the
then Queen Elizabeth etc.
UK FOOD
English people have very unusual taste in food and strange names for
their dishes.
Fish and chips – as the name says, fried fish and potato originally
wrapped in newspaper sheets.
Steak and kidney pudding, it is actually a pie consisting of the two
meats contained in its name.
Marmite spread – it is a strange tasting spread made of yeast
extract.
Curry – Brits have taken over some of the dishes originating from
their colonies. Curry has become almost British national dish.
