INTRODUCTION

One of the roles and functions of the TSC is to monitor


adherence to the Code of Ethics for Teachers.

This code is read side by side with the Code of Ethics for the
Public Service.
Values and Principles that apply to a teacher

(a)integrity and honesty' principles


(b) impartiality and objectivity;
(c) excellence and professionalism;
(d) loyalty and respect;
(e) accountability;
(f) confidentiality;
(g) selflessness;
(h) dedication; and
(i) Commitment
Duties of a teacher
a) Uphold professionalism
 Use knowledge and skill to enhance learner competencies
 Strive to increase the competency and professionalism
 Offer support to educational institution
 Not engage in acts that undermine the dignity of the
profession
a) Research and Development
 Participate in research and development within the profession
 Keep updated with developments in theory and practice

c) Resource Utilization
 Account for the available resources
 Use available resources efficiently

d) False or misleading information


 Not give false or misleading information regarding
qualifications and experience
 Not aid another teacher to give false information
 Not assist a learner to give false information

 Understand, support and implement policies of an educational
institution
Regardless of the teachers personal feelings.

 Treat examination records with the highest level of
confidentiality
Institutional management;
 Not aid or abet a person in an examination malpractice.

 Act within the boundary of authority
 Make decisions in line with authorized standards and
procedures
 Safeguard institutional funds and other property
 Not damage, lose or misappropriate funds
TEACHERS' RELATIONS
(a) A teacher and an educational Institution

A teacher is responsible for implementing


educational programs and instructions;
A teacher shall not be absent from duty
from official duties;
A teacher shall respect collective
agreements entered into between the
employer and the union;

 A teacher shall not conduct personal business in an educational


institution that undermines a teachers professionalism

 Resolve disputes with fellow teachers amicably

Not discriminate against the learner
Put in place reasonable measures to accommodate
learners with special needs
Maintain appropriate acceptable relationship with
learners

 Shall not disclose information about a learner given


in confidence except:
a) As required by the law

b) In the interest of a learner, parent or public.

 Shall exercise discipline over a learner in a just and


fair manner;
Shall not humiliate, threaten, intimidate, harass or
blackmail a learner
Shall not aid or abet a learner in corruption
Shall not accept gifts, favours or additional
compensation that might influence the teachers
professional decisions

 Show curtesy and respect to a parent


Communicate all affairs of a learner to a parent
timely
Encourage a parent to participate in the activities of
an education institution when called upon.

 Participate in the development of the teacher’s


immediate and wider community

CONCLUSION

The Code of Ethics for teachers is read side by side


with the Code of Ethics for the Public Service.
Teachers are encouraged to read the code and abide
by it.
