What is Disinfectant?
A disinfectant is a chemical substance or
compound used to inactivate or destroy
microorganisms on inert surfaces.
Disinfection does not necessarily kill all
microorganisms, especially resistant
bacterial spores; it is less effective than
sterilization, which is an extreme physical
or chemical process that kills all types of
life.

Important to choose Disinfectant?

 When choosing a disinfectant it is important to
read and follow manufacturer ’s instructions. The
ration for dilution and the contact time(the amount
of visibly moist time required to be effective
against pathogens listed on product label) are
essential and can vary widely based on the
manufacturer and delivery method.

not all disinfectants have the same concentration.
Be sure to mix the correct proportion based on the
instructions on the label. Any disinfectant product
should be diluted when it is concentrated. If it is
not labeled “concentrated", it means it must not be
diluted and must be used directly from the

 All disinfectants should specify a contact time in their directions for use. Contact time is the
amount of time the surface must stay moist with disinfectant in order for the disinfectant to be
effective.
 Disinfectant must have efficacy claims on the label. In the disinfectant claims, efficacy is the
effectiveness with which a disinfecting solution kills organisms when used according to label
instruction.

In choosing disinfectant, the ideal would be ;

 Maintain its efficacy
 Be inexpensive
 Be nontoxic and non-irritating
 Include strips for checking effectiveness
 Be readily available from multiple manufacturers
 Be recommended by Philippine Public Health Association
 Be environmentally friendly
 Have no odor
 Be non-corrosive 4 4

Look at kill claims dopes the disinfectant that you are choosing kill the
pathogens that are of concern in your facility? Think about HIA’S as well those
that can cause out breaks and pandemics.

Check out kill times and wet contact times this is an especially important area.
You may be deciding between two or three disinfectants and one may have a
higher kill time and you have to keep the surface visibly wet in order for the
disinfectant to be effective. You may not have the staff on hand to keep surface
visibly wet for the necessary kill time. You should also consider the kill times for
pathogens of concern.

Consider safety of the product; When you look at labeling on the disinfectant
does it have an acceptable toxicity and flammability rating? Look if there is any
personal protection equipment needed when the disinfectant. 5 5

1. Alcohol - Rubbing alcohol has several potential uses for personal

care and household cleaning. These uses include cleaning bites
and piercing, eliminating odors, and cleaning and disinfecting
surface and items within the home.
2. Lysol - A solution containing a mixture of cresols in water, used as
an antiseptic and disinfectant.
3. Zonrox Bleach - it is the ingredient of Sodium Hypochlorite; it is a
strong oxidizer and in the presence of oxidizing agent, it oxidize
the cell membrane of microorganisms, which results in a loss of
structure and leads to cellists and death.
