UNIT PROFILE

1. Climate changes: causes, effects on human and animal

populations

2. Contribution of fossil fuels to global warming, pollution and

extreme weather

3. Critical thresholds and “tipping points” in climate change

2. OUTCOMES
• Understand cause –and –effect relationships

• Understand causation and correlation

• Use flowcharts to note causes and effects

• Understand passive and active voice

1. Discussion

What are the main causes of climate change?

What are the impact of this change?

WHY USEFUL?

To see how certain events or actions ARE CONNECTED

1. Causation:
- Occurs when an event RESULTS directly to another.
- One thing will cause another.
2. Correlation:
- Occurs when an event occurs together with another.
- It cannot be proved that one causes the other.
DISCUSSION
1. Look at the graph. How did temperatures change between 1900 and 2000?
2. What are natural factors in climate change? What are human factors?

• Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap heat in the atmosphere,
causing increased temperatures.

• Increased temperatures cause oceans to absorb excess heat, then rising

ocean temperatures cause ocean water to increase in volume (thermal
expansion), leading to rising sea levels. Increased temperatures also
cause glaciers and sea ice to melt, which leads to rising sea levels.

• Rising sea level lead to flooding in low-lying areas (e.g. Nile delta,
Bangladesh, low-lying island) and coastal areas.

Discuss in GROUPS
• Causes and Negative Impacts of Climate Change
Causation vs Correlation
• Causation occurs when an event or action result in another
E.g: Heating water causes it to expand

• Events or actions are correlated occur together. Correlation are often

used to predict outcomes, but it does not mean that one event
necessarily causes the other
E.g: Breathing polluted air correlates to the occurrence of asthma
