Discrete Math 01

TL;DR: A branch of math that deals with

discrete (or discontinuous) objects

What the • Discrete: as in photon or quanta, each element in

a discrete set is unique and discontinuous

eff is this Is (in reality) mandatory for anyone

taking computer-related majors (IT, IS,
subject? CS)

Folks sometimes call this subject

“Informatics Math”
Logic (propositional and Boolean)

• Also, Boolean Algebra is on the menu

Methods of Proof

Syllabus
Combinatorics and Discrete Probability

• High school math, I suppose?

Graph and Tree

• Yes, we should have learned this BEFORE DS&A

Binary Relationship and Set (if we have time)

Course Logistics

• Due to the need to do this in half-class batches (Class 1 is full-house), there

would be some acceleration
• No blended learning (ARGH!)
• Textbook: if it contains the topics in the syllabus, anything goes
• Convenient text: R. Munir, “Matematika Diskrit”, Penerbit
INFORMATIKA, 2016
• Spoiler: If you can get this textbook, you will get some of the
exercise problems
Assignments plus In-class flexing: 25-30%

• Also includes homework if any

• In-class flexing will be used to boost this part

Grading Midterms: 30-35%

Policy • two rounds of multiple choice and essay

Finals: 35-ish%

• (no project this time around, sadly)

Similar with other classes: lecture,
solved problem, exercise, show time
• Unlike programming class, “show time” means
you got to answer the exercise problems
Class Since both classes start 1030, we’ll
Organizatio typically start at 1035-ish

n Appoint a class manager

We create some Discord server (feel

free to reuse past semesters’ )
Adjustments for no blended learning

• In-class flexing for one half of the class will be used as take-home exercise
for other class
• Assignments are for both halves of the class
• Whiteboards will take form of the trusty Paint plus pen tablet
• I’ll plug the exercise question to a separate PPT file, then the flexing will
be stored separately (to be spilled prior to exam, please remind me!)
• I’d like to record the class, but we’ll see if it is possible
