Conic Section

Ashish Shrestha
It is the Intersection of a Plane and a
Cone. By changing the angle and
location of intersection, we can produce
a circle, ellipse, parabola or hyperbola.
Introduction

Different Conic Sections
• Circle
• Ellipse
• Parabola
• Hyperbola

3
Terminologies in Conic
Section
•Generator
•Axis
•Focus
•Directrix
•Eccentricity
•Vertex
•Vertex angle
•Latus rectum
4
It’s a straight line which runs from
Axis the apex of the cone to the center of
the base.

5
Cones joined at a fixed point is called
Vertex vertex

6
It’s a straight line that rotates about
Generator the vertex

7
Vertex It’s the angle between the generator and
Angle the axis

8
Directrix It’s the perimeter of the base

9
How much a conic section varies
Eccentricity from being circular? denoted by e.

10
Focus The fixed point is the focus.

11
Latus It’s the double ordinate which passes
rectum through the focus.

12
Conic Section Based on Eccentricity

e=0 0< e < 1 e=1 e>1

e=∞
?
13
Ellipse
When the plane intersects the double right
circular cone in such a way that the angle
between the plane and the axis is greater
than the vertex angle we get a closed
curve called an ellipse.
