How to Write Chapter 1

of a Research Paper

Introduction
 Itis the presentation of the problem, that is, what is
the study/topic all about? This will also indicate what
will be covered in the study.
 The Rationale of the study. The reason or reasons why
it is necessary to conduct the study must be discussed.
 Historical background of the problem/topic.
 Discussyour desire to have a deeper and clearer
understanding about the topic, your desire to find a
better way of doing something or improving something,
and your desire to discover something.
Statement of the Problem

There should be a general statement


of the whole problem followed by the
10 specific questions or sub problems.
These are already formulated at the
beginning of the study.
Significance of the Study
 The
relevance of the study to existing conditions
must be explained or discussed.
 Thepossible solutions to existing problems or
improvements must be discussed. Who are to be
benefitted and how they are going to be
benefitted. The possible contributions to the
fund of knowledge.
 Discussed the possible implications of the study.
(the possible cause of the problems, the possible
effects of the problem, and the remedial
measures to solve the problem).
The Scope and Delimitations of the
Study
A brief statement of the general purpose of the
study. (topic/s discussed)
 Thelocale of the study, where the data were
gathered or the entity to which the data belong.
The population from which the respondents
were selected. Explained why you choose them
to be your respondents.
 Thesampling method used. The period of the
study conducted.
UNDERSTANDING
 Is the key to perform ones work correctly.
