CLASSIFICATION OF

CORROSION
CLASSIFICATION OF CORRISION
Corrosion may be classified as different ways:
Wet/Aqueous corrosion
Dry corrosion
 Dry corrosion:
 Dry corrosion occurs when there is no water or moisture to aid
the corrosion and oxidises with atmosphere alone.

 It involves direct attack of chemicals on metal surface.

 The process is slow. Corrosion products are accumulate at the
place where corrosion occurs.

 The process of corrosion is uniform. Dry corrosion occurs at

high temperature. It occurs in both heterogeneous and
homogenous surfaces.
WET CORRISION
Wet corrosion:
 Wet corrosion is most common form of
corrosion.
 It will occur if an electrochemical is
produced. Wet corrosion occurs at near room
temperature.
 An electrochemical cell consists of an
anode, cathode, connection and an
electrolyte. Anode is the metal that
corrodes.

 The cathode can be a metal or any other

conducting material. An electrolyte must
be presented to allow for migration of ions
between anode and participate in
corrosion products
 Wet corrosion therefore involves an oxidation
reaction at anode and reduction reaction at
cathode.

 Corrosion occurs in the prescence of

conducting medium. It involves the
formation of electrochemical cell.
 It is a rapid process. Corrosion occurs at
anode but rust is deposited at cathode. It
depends on size of the anodic part of metal.

 It occurs only on heterogeneous metal

surfaces.
