Opinion Marking
Signals
What are FACTS?
These are statements that are
true and can be verified
objectively or proven. In other
words, a fact is true and correct
no matter what.
Examples:
1. The sun is the center of the solar system.
2. Daang Kalikasan is a 60 km four-way lane
national highway under the build-build project of
the DPWH Pangasinan and Zambales. 
3. Manleluag hot spring is located in Barangay
Malabobo Mangatarem, Pangasinan, it is inside
the area of Manleluag Spring Protected
Landscape and has been open to the public for
quite some time.
Examples:
4. There are 365 days in a year.
5. Mangatarem is 29 kilometres from
provincial capital Lingayen and 177
kilometres from Manila.
6. Municipality of Lingayen is a 1st class
municipality and capital of the province
of Pangasinan.
What are OPINIONS?
These are statements that
reflect the views or ideas that
people have about subjects
and topics.
Example:
1. Chocolate ice cream is better than
vanilla ice cream.
2. I think, the performers that we
watched are the best.
3. Mangga tastes better than guava.
4. Christmas in the time of pandemic
is the worst Christmas ever.
What are OPINIONS?
Opinions may not be rooted
in fact or be supported by
strong evidence, though there
are exceptions, such as in the
case of expert opinions.
Identify facts from opinions
1.The sun is a star.
2.I think, the performers that we watched
are the best.
3.Covid-19 is life threatening.
4.Christmas in the time of pandemic is
the worst Christmas ever.
5. She thinks we are going to eat at Mang
Inasal.
What are opinion marking
signals?
Opinion – marking signals are
the words and phrases that we
use to help us better express or
share our ideas and opinions.
Below are some other examples of opinion-
marking signals.
The following sentences express
opinions using the opinion-marking
signals.
a. I feel happy about being a Filipino.
b. It seems that Filipinos have strong
family ties.
c. From what I know, Filipinos are
popular for being hospitable.
d. Personally, I think that Filipinos
give importance to education.
e. Maybe Filipinos are resilient
because they find ways to survive.
f. In my experience, Filipino
families go to church and pray
together.
g. I hope Filipino children will
continue to respect their elders by
saying “po” and “opo”.
h. It is a belief of the Filipinos that
when you respect others, they will
respect you as well.
REMEMBER: Sometimes, there are cases when
statements contain facts but are still considered as
opinion. This is particular in editorial writing where
facts are often used to support opinions.
Examples:
1. I totally agree, that papaya aids digestion
because it is high in fiber.
2. Everyone will agree that Catriona Gray won
the Miss Universe 2018 crown because she is
the most beautiful among the contestants.
