INTRODUCTORY MESSAGE

Welcome to English 8!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of

the Schools Division of Capiz and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents, and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic
Education Curriculum.
The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed
to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using
the contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners
in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity
and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The English 8 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the teaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with
minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made
available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent
learning.

For the learner:

The English 8 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning

even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful
and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner,
carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and
answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed
schedule.

Using Opinion-Marking Signals to Share Ideas

I. Learning Competency

Use opinion-marking signals to share ideas.

II. Background information for learners

Each is entitled to his own opinion. As we all know, opinions are

subjective, which means that a man’s point-of-view is his alone. Opinion is
important because it allows us to consider different ideas coming from various
sources, therefore giving us the opportunity to question and analyze. It also
requires us to gather facts in order to support our side. The opinion marking
signals will help us indicate our views about certain topics. There are opinion-
marking signals that we may use to introduce ideas; there are also signals to
conclude them.
In this lesson, you will know how to express your own thoughts using
these signals. You will share your opinions about popular beliefs, famous
proverbs, and other issues that concern you. The last part of the activity will
allow you to compose your own essay.

Activity 4

Write an opinion essay on this topic “Covid-19 Brings out the Best and the
Worst in People.” Use opinion expressions to emphasize your point. In writing
your essay, you may use the following structure.

Paragraph 1 – Write an introduction to your essay. State your main idea or the
point you are trying to prove and give two reasons for your stand.

Example:
In my opinion, Covid-19 forced us to take a break from our normal
activities and continue living in the comfort of our own homes. Because of this
pandemic, many kinds of hero stepped forward to save lives and protect the
vulnerable. On the other hand, a lot of workers lost their jobs while some decided
to commit crimes to answer the call of a rumbling stomach.

Paragraph 2 and 3 – Write the body of your essay. Explain in detail the
reasons you have stated in your first paragraph. Develop a paragraph for each
reason you have cited.

Example:
Front liners took their oath seriously to save lives no matter what is at
stake. They left behind their worrying families to combat an invisible enemy.
Good Samaritans readily offered their resources to feed both the front liners and
the hungry. Good Samaritans offered a portion of their wealth to help put a stop
to this viral outbreak. The more people were encouraged to apply social
distancing, the more they got closer to their loved ones.
On the contrary, we have witnessed how some took advantage of the
situation to satisfy their personal interests. We have seen how oppression
happened just because the victims were helpless. We had a glimpse of the
wolves hiding behind sheep’s clothing.

Paragraph 4 – Write your conclusion. Sum up your position by restating your

main idea and finishing with a “call to action.”

6
Quarter 2, Week 2

Example:
For the reasons above, it’s clear that Covid-19 brings out the best and
the worst in people. However, we must always remember the quote that we
learned from the movie 2012 that says, “The moment we stop fighting for each
other, is time we lose our humanity.” We must remember that no matter how
hard life gets, we can always find strength in each other.
