COMPARISON OF CHEMICAL
PROPERTIES AND
REACTIVITIES,USES OF METALS
REACTION WITH NITROGEN REACTION WITH NITROGEN
They don’t form nitrides directly They form stable nitrides when heated
with nitrogen
3Mg +N2 Mg3N2

REACTION WITH CARBON REACTION WITH CARBON

They don’t react with carbon They give stable carbide on heating
directly Ca + 2C CaC2
Uses of sodium
 Sodium potassium alloy is used as coolant in nuclear
reactor.
 It is used to produce yellow light in sodium vapour lamp.
 It is used as reducing agent in extraction of metals like Ti
(titanium)

Uses of magnesium
 Used in flashlight bulbs and fireworks
 In the manufacturing of light alloys
 Magnesium ribbon is used in thermite process to ignite
aluminium powder
 Used as anode for prevention of corrosion
Uses of calcium
 Used to remove sulphur from petroleum
 Used as reducing agent to produce Cr, U, and Zr
