Drainage of Bengal Basin

 Three river system is comprises the Bengal delta and all rivers are
belonging under these river system.
 The Ganges (The Padma and their numerous tributaries and

distributaries)
 The Brahmaputra- jamuna

 The Surma-Meghna

 These drainage system of the table land, the flood plains, The delta and
the northern and north-eastern hilly region.
 Beside above,
 The Karnaphuly

 The Sangu,

 The Mathamuhuri and

 The Naf along with their feeding channels drain the water of the high

hill ranges of Chittagong and Chittagong Hill tract directly to the Bay of
Bengal.

The Ganges
 The Ganges has been formed by the combination of two tributaries
called the Bhagirathi and the Alakananda which are originated from the
Zanskar Range west of Nanda Devi and the Gangoatri glacier north of
Kedarnath at a point called Gaumukh.

 A network of numerous channels has developed from the three main


distributaries, the Mathabhanga, Bhairab and the Gorai-Madhumoti.
The Brahmaputra- Jamuna
 The Brahmaputra rises from Manasarowar Lake and Mount Kailas.
 Tista is largest tributary of the Brahmaputra.
 Karatoa is the longest tributary of the Jamuna and its another name
Atri from Khansama Upazila.
 The old Brahmaputra has several small distributary namely , The
Bansi, the Banar, the Sirkali,
 Ghaghat is a distributary of the Tista.
 Bangali is a distributary
 Dhaleswari is the largest distributary of Jamuna.
The Surma-Meghna
 The Surma originated from Manipur.

 The Surma meets the old Brahmaputra at Bhairab Bazar and


the name Meghna and meet again with the Padma and fall
in Bay of Bengal as named Meghna.

 The Kushiara branched from Meghna and received the Manu


river.

 A number of hill channel has been meet with this river and
characterised by flash flood.
Drainage of the Delta of the Ganges
 The three main distributaries, the Mathabhanga, Bhairab and the Gorai-
Madhumoti have built up nearly the four-fifth of the Delta. Important
branches of those river are listed bellow.

 Bhairab: Khulna Ichhamoti, Kalindi, Hariabhanga, Raimangal, Kabodak, Dholpetan,


Arpangsia

 Mathabhanga: Churni, Chitra, Nabaganga, Kumar

 Gorai-Madhumoti: Kaliganga, Baleshor, Haringhata, Rupsha, Kazibacha,


Pussur.

 Depends on the climatic condition of Bangladesh, the seasons are
classified into four season.
 The pre-monsoon season (March to May)
 The Monsoon season (June to September)
 The Post-Monsoon season ( October to November)
