water

resources
Teacher : Ms. Jessica May B. Dime, LPT
Learning objectives:
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

• Recognize how water is distributed on Earth;

• Identify the various water resources on Earth;
• Explain how different activities affect the quality and availability of water for
human use;
• Suggest ways of conserving and protecting water resources.
Water resources
Water covers about three-quarter of earth's surface and is necessary
element for life.
3 basic steps in the global
water cycle:
1st step: 2nd step: 3rd step:
Water precipitates from Travels on the surface and Evaporates or transpires
the atmosphere through groundwater to back to the atmosphere
the oceans from land or evaporates
from the oceans
distribution of freshwater
resources
Freshwater accounts for only 6% of the world's water supply, but is
essential for human uses such as drinking, agriculture,
manufacturing, and sanitation. Two-thirds of global freshwater is
found underground. Groundwater typically fill very small spaces
(pore) within rocks and between sediment grains.
aquifer
depletion of freshwater
resources
In many parts of the world people are extracting water from aquifers
more quickly than the aquifers replenished by recharge. In addition
to draining aquifers, excessive groundwater pumping chnges
groundwater flow patterns around wells and can drain nearby rivers
and streams.
water pollution
Microorganisms Disinfectants and water Inorganic Chemicals
Such as cryptosporidium, disinfetion by-products Such as arsenic, cadmium, lead,
giardia, and fecal coliform and mercury.
bacteria Includes chlorine, bromate, and
chlorite

Organic Chemicals Radionuclides

Such as benzene, dioxin, and Including uranium and radium
vinyl chloride
Clean Water
Act
The Act initially focused on point
sources, which it regulate through a
national program that requires sources
to obtain permits for any discharges of
controlled pollutants into the nation's
"navigable waters".
