Connection to other forms of Abuse

●While Emotional abuse is considered a separate category from the


other types of abuse, it is also connected to other forms of abuse.
●Emotional abuse can lead to more severe mental health issues in
children compared to those who suffer physcial or sexual abuse.
●When other forms of abuse are connected to emotional abuse, it
creates lingering effects on children’s mental health into adulthood.
●There are studies that suggest that adults who had trauma in their
childhoods through emotional abuse are more likely to develop cancer.

● Inferiority complex
● Motivation issues and/or depression
● Physical Pains (abdominal, headaches, etc.)
● Continuous Fatigue (mental/physical)
● Attachment Issues
● Difficulties Beginning/Maintaining
Relationships
Risk Factors
● Guardians who:
● are susceptible to substance abuse (alcohol,
drugs, etc.)
● have been neglected before as children
● have low income (can’t provide needed attention)
● have mental health issues (depression, bipolar
disorder, etc.)
● Environments that lack emotional security (i.e.
dangerous neighbourhoods, schools with inadequate
resources for mental health)
Protective Factors
● Guardians who:
● provide healthy discipline and learning
opportunities
● have healthy coping habits and mechanisms
● show concern and interest in children’s interests
● Environments rich in emotional security (i.e. safe
neighbourhoods, proper infrastructure in schooling
system for mental health, multiple high quality after-
school programs)
Healthy Coping Strategies
● Problem-Based -> solve issues in order to reduce stress factors.
Includes:
❏ organizing and planning schedule/s
❏ establishing boundaries (when the problem is too great for
one person, when too much time is being spent, etc.)
❏ Improving time management skills
● Emotion-Based -> take care of unwanted/foreboding feelings.
Includes:
❏ practicing mindfulness meditation
❏ indulging in a hobby (in moderation)
❏ relaxation techniques (i.e. breathing exercises, counting)
❏ exercise
Ways to Prevent Emotional Abuse

● Use respectful language and tone.


● Being mindful of children’s feelings.
● Using self-care to relieve stress.
● Listening to calming music.
● Breathing techniques.
● Exercise and yoga
● Positive Affirmations
