types of steel

What is steel
Steel is a combination of two elements, iron and carbon.
Steel are broken is broken into four types and then in
those types steel is broken down into grades. There are
four main types of steel, Carbon Steels, Alloy Steels,
Stainless Steels, Tool Steels.
Carbon steel.
It's both malleable and ductile, has a comparatively low
tensile strength, and the hardness of the metal's surface
can be improved by carburising, a heat treatment
process. The carbon content of steel is between 0.002%
and 2.14% by weight for plain carbon steel (iron-carbon
alloys). Too little carbon content leaves (pure) iron quite
soft, ductile, and weak. Carbon contents higher than
those of steel make a brittle alloy commonly called pig
iron. t's used to make extremely hard components like
Stainless steel.
Stainless steels are steels containing at least 10.5% chromium, less than 1.2% carbon and other alloying
elements. Stainless steel's corrosion resistance and mechanical properties can be further enhanced by
adding other elements, such as nickel, molybdenum, titanium, niobium, manganese, etc. What are the
properties of stainless steel?
Corrosion resistant.
High tensile strength.
Very durable.
Temperature resistant.
Easy formability and fabrication.
Low-maintenance (long lasting)
Attractive appearance.
Environmentally friendly (recyclable)
The more ductile grades are used to make grills, cookers, saucepans, and sinks .
Alloy steel.
Alloy steels offer economy, high performance, corrosion
resistance, durability, high strength, high strength to
weight ratio, high performance under harsh conditions
and a wide variety of products to suit most applications.
Alloy steel is a type of steel alloyed with several
elements such as molybdenum, manganese, nickel,
chromium, vanadium, silicon, and boron. These alloying
elements are added to increase strength, hardness, wear
resistance, and toughness. The amounts of alloying
Tool steel.
Tool steels are a family carbon and alloy steels having
distinct characteristics such as hardness, wear
resistance, toughness, and resistance to softening at
elevated temperatures. Tool steels comprise carbide-
forming elements such as chromium, vanadium,
molybdenum and tungsten in different combinations.
Tool steels are high-quality, carbon and alloy steels that
are commonly used to make cutters, reamers, bits etc
used for machining metals, plastics, and wood.
