FOCUSING ON

WHAT MATTERS
MOST
COLOSSIANS 3:1-2
COLOSSIANS 3:1-2

1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek

those things which are above, where
Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2 Set your affection on things above,
not on things on the earth.
• Objective: Fulfill the ultimate goal.
• Purpose: To refresh our minds with Godly things
• Theme: God is good all the time
FOCUSED VERSES: Colossians 3:1-2
INTRODUCTION:

What consumes your mind controls your life.”

We struggle everyday focusing on what really

matters, we always have time to worldly things
disregarding what really matters most- seeking
the things from above or simply seeking the
ONE who holds and controls everything.
Self check:
• “You can yell like a lion and not say one thing to God. You can scream
and pray boldly, but your prayer still won’t touch Heaven. Examine
yourself! Are you just throwing words around or are you focusing?
God looks at the heart. There are people who can ramble and say
repetitive things and not think about God once. Does your heart align
with the words that come out of your mouth?
• Are you looking to God or are you praying to Him while your mind is
on other things? You have to fight this. This doesn’t only apply to
worship, but this also applies to all religious activities. We can serve at
church while our hearts are away from the Lord.”
• -Bible Reasons-
HOW DO WE SET OUR FOCUS IN
GOD?
• 1. PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT IS ESSENTIAL THAT HONORS GOD.
• Christians must be careful of how they focus their attention .” What we give our attention to
is what we are being discipled by. Another way to put it, is what fills our minds ultimately fills
our hearts.”
(heavenly vs. earthly things)
• Romans 12:2 that as Christians we are called to “not be conformed to this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing,
and perfect will of God.”
• -Matthew 6:33
• Distractions of the world and its danger:
• - We become what we behold. What absorbs our
interest, what we give our attention to most, shapes our
thinking and fills our hearts.
• -Where we spend our time will shape our life.
• -What we watch will change the way we see the world.
• -What we listen to will change the way we speak about
others.
• What we read will change the way we think about issues.
2. WE CAN FOCUS ON GOD BY SIMPLY
ASSESSING OURSELVES

2 Timothy 2:15
• “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman
that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word
of truth.”
HOW?
•-Repent, ask for forgiveness, and acknowledge God’s loving
mercy through Jesus Christ.
•-Live up to the standard of approval that our Father has given us.
•-Not be ashamed of what we say we believe and how we live up
with each other.
•-Understand the truth and live accordingly.

CONCLUSION:
• FOCUSING ON GOD REQUIRES GREAT ATTENTION AND EFFORT. In a world full of
distraction we tend to loose our focus, we seldom read God’s words and meditate what we
read and as a result our spiritual aspect weakens and we slowly get uninterested of what
God wants us to become.
• As children of God let us remind ourselves that our home is in heaven and our hope relies
on Jesus alone, He is the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:1-2).
• Our word of thoughts influences our action.
• What we achieved and prayed for comes from Him and He is the main reason why we are
still alive and experiencing continuous favors.
• Let us not disregard how good, faithful and loving our God is. Lets focus our minds and
hearts to the ONE Who owns it.
2 Corinthians 4:18 So we fix our eyes not
on what is seen, but on what is unseen,
since what is seen is temporary, but what is
unseen is eternal.
