Words in English Chapter 11 : Stress in Complex and Compound Words

Simple = stem compound= stem+ stem ice-cream

complex=(stem+suffix) goodness, personality, logical, lovely..etc


or (prefix +stem) unhappy, irrelevant, illegal, inaccurate ..etc

Stress in Complex words : Stress in words with suffixes (stem+suffix)


• Suffixes carrying primary stress themselves
- e.g.: ‘refugee’ rɛfjʊˈdʒiː , ‘volunteer’ˌvɒlənˈtɪə , ‘cigarette’ sɪɡəˈret, ‘picturesque’ ˌpɪktʃəˈrɛsk

• Suffixes that do not affect stress placement


- e.g.: ‘comfortable’, ‘storage’, ‘powerless’, ‘glorify’, happiness

• Suffixes that shift stress from the 1st syllable of the stem to the 2nd syllable of the stem
- e.g.: ‘photography’, ‘climatic’, ‘perfection’, ‘reflexive’
Stress in Compound words

Orthography
One word , e.g.: armchair, sunflower
Two words separated by a space , e.g. desk lamp, battery charger
Two words separated by a hyphen ,e.g. gear-change, fruit-cake
