Infrared waves, or infrared light, are part of the
electromagnetic spectrum. People encounter Infrared waves every day. The human eye cannot see it, but humans can detect it as heat. A remote control uses light waves just beyond the visible spectrum of light. Infrared light waves change channels on your TV. This region of the spectrum is divided into near-, mid-, and far-infrared. The region from 8 to 15 microns (µm) is referred to by Earth scientists as thermal infrared since these wavelengths are best for studying the long wave thermal energy radiating from our planet. What is frequency Frequency describes the number of waves that pass a fixed place in a given amount of time. So if the time it takes for a wave to pass is is ½ second, the frequency is 2 per second. If it takes 1/1000 per hour.
Usually frequency is measured in the hertz unit, named in honor of the 19 th century German physicist Heinrich Rudolf Hertz. The hertz measurement abbreviated Hz, is the number of waves that pass by per second. For example, an “A” note on a violin string vibrates at about 400 Hz (400 vibrations per second) What is wavelength?
. It is important to realize that a wave is quite a different object than a
particle. A common example of a wave is a wave on the ocean - we know they carry energy, as they cause erosion on the shore, but material (i. e. , water) is not continuously being transferred onto the shore. Another example of a wave is a sound wave, which is vibrations of air molecules which propagate from one place to another. These also carry energy, but do not involve the mass movement of air from one place to another.
The term wavelength is also sometimes applied to modulated waves,
and to the sinusoidal envelopes of modulated waves or waves formed by interference of several sinusoids. Light and its Properties

MORE GENERALLY, ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM (OF WHICH VISIBLE LIGHT IS ONE EXAMPLE) ARE TRANSMITTED AS A SIGNAL THAT OUR RADIOS PICK UP SO WE CAN LISTEN TO MUSIC. IN A VACUUM (A CONTAINER WITH NO AIR), LIGHT TRAVELS AT THE SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 299 792 458 METERS PER SECOND (M/S). THIS IS KNOWN AS THE SPEED OF LIGHT. IT IS THE FASTEST THAT ANYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE IS ABLE TO MOVE! FOR COMPARISON, THE SPEED OF SOUND IS ONLY APPROXIMATELY 300 M/S. THIS IS WHY DURING A STORM YOU ALWAYS SEE LIGHTNING BEFORE HEARING THUNDER. Visible light waves are a form of electromagnetic radio waves such as infrared radiation, X-rays, microwaves, and ultraviolet radiation. We can see these waves as the colours of the rainbow where each colour includes a different wavelength. Red has the longest wavelength and violet has the shortest one.
