Introduction
• Cast iron are extensively used in industries due to
• low cost
• high strength
• high melting temperature
but it has poor thermal conductivity therefore improvement of
their thermal performances is new challenge . There are some
technics are available to enhance heat transfer are discuss
below
Heat transfer enhancement technique
• Conventional Methods.
• Nanofluids
• Coatings
Conventional methods
• Heat transfer can be improved by adding fins to heat transfer
surfaces. By the addition of fins, we mainly increase heat
transfer area, and
increasing turbulence results in improved heat transfer as well.
• But the length of object is very long then it is very difficult to
manufacture such object
• Also it is costly.
• This is disadvantage of conventional technique
Coating
• coatings on metal surfaces for heat transfer application that
involves a complex process, more time and limited lifespan of
the coatings.
• Heat transfer can be promoted by
(1) Using a thin layer of high thermal conductivity materials (such as
MWCNTs, gold, silver, etc.) or metal compounds;
(2) applying a suitable organic promoter to the condensation/heat
transfer surface.

• These methods used by previous researchers had problems such

as short lifetime, condensate contamination, high cost and
additional thermal resistance.
Nano fluids
• The results of all heat transfer mechanisms using nanofluids is
still quite restricted. There are a number of obstacles faced by
nanofluids community restricting its preparation.

• In order to overcome these problems, effort is made to resolve

the problem by new approaches, namely by developing the
metal alloying with high thermal conductivity materials.
• In this study initially, the importance and motivation is the
evaluation of the thermal characteristics for the alloying material.
• In this we make 4 compositions
1. Pure cast iron
2. Cast iron 75 wt.% & 25wt.% copper
3. Cast iron 50 wt.% & 50wt.% copper
4. Pure copper
• By using this compositions make comparatively experimental
and mathematical study.
Objectives
The objectives of the present research work are,

1. To enhance the heat transfer performance of metal (cast iron k – 8.5 to 53 w/m-k, tm -
1400℃) by alloying high thermal conductivity material (copper k- 385 w/m-k , tm - 1000 ℃).
2. To investigate the thermal properties of material developed such as thermal
conductivity, heat transfer rate, specific heat, thermal diffusivity and coefficient of
thermal expansion.
3. To investigate mechanical and physical properties.
4. To develope the correlation between the composition and the thermal and mechanical
and physical properties.
5. To experimentally validate the recommended methods for producing the materials with
improved thermal properties.
6. Experimentally investigate the temperature distribution in the non–Alloying and alloying
material.

7. Thermal analysis using ANSYS.

Scope
• The following are the scope of the research work.
1. Manufacture of the specimens of different composition to enhance rate of heat transfer.
2. Vary the percentage of composition by weight and produce the specimens.
3. Evaluate the thermal characteristics like thermal conductivity, specific heat,
thermal diffusion and coefficient of thermal expansions of different compositions.
4. Analyze the effect of composition on the thermal characteristics.
5. Analyze the effect of composition on mechanical and physical properties.
6. Develop a procedure to enhance the thermal characteristics by varying the
percentage composition.
7. Study the variation of thermal properties with respect to temperature.
8. Experimentally validate the thermal properties of the thermal interface
materials.
9. Develop methods to enhance heat transfer using this alloying elements.
APPLICATIONS OF THE RESEARCH

• In the internal combustion engine. generally ic engines are made up

of cast iron having low thermal conductivity if we increase the
thermal conductivity by alloying high thermal conductivity material
then engine temperature is maintained at specific temperature.
• In electric vehicles battery casing.
• In the mobile frames which are generally made up of low thermal
conductivity material such as aluminium.
• The surface where fins are very difficult to manufacture such as long
surfaces.
• The applications where other heat transfer enhancing techniques are
fail.
Methodology of The Research Work
1. Thorough literature survey to understand current status of the
research work that is already carried out in this area and to find
out advantages and limitations of the solutions provided in the
literature.
2. Experimentation with varying the specimen composition for
altering the Thermal properties.
3. Recommend alternate solutions and validate the new
methodology again using experiments.
