Student Investigation

Report
Reporting on the scientific investigation
Task:
• Write an aim
• Identify the IV and the DV
• Formulate a hypothesis that outlines the predicted outcome

• Display your results in a meaningful way using a table OR graph, remembering to have these correctly
labelled and captioned
• Write a discussion
• Conclude your investigation by referring back to the hypothesis and your research question

You are required to present your scientific investigation in the form of a digital A3 poster that is submitted electronically
by the due date.

Max 600 words

Title:

• Your title should be in the form of a question:

Do tomato seedlings grow better if exposed to longer daylight

hours?

• It must be something you can scientifically investigate

Aim

Aim
• Always start the aim with one of the following:
- To investigate
- To observe

Mention the variables in the aim

**Remember that the IV affects the DV**
• IV: What are you changing?
• DV: What change are you looking for?
Hypothesis

a b c d e f
relationship phrase trend indicator trend indicator
(to the IV) (effect on the DV) (action by the IV).

If… …depends on… …then… ...show an increase/ …when… …increased/decreased…

(the DV)… decrease ...

…results from…
…be greater than/less than… …greater/less…

…is affected by…
…be larger/smaller… …large/small…

…is directly related to…

• This is a prediction of what you think you will observe by changing your IV
Results

You must present your results of the investigation using an appropriate format to
demonstrate trends, patterns and/or relationships.
You will most likely use a table OR a graph to illustrate your results.
Both will require:
• Titles
• Caption – Table 1, shows the growth of a tomato plant exposed to 6, 8, 10, 12
an 14 hours of daylight.
- Graph 1, shows the growth trend of tomato plants plotted against
daylight exposure time

Remember you must also always include axis labels and all units

Discussion

This section includes the following:

• Interpretation and evaluation of your data
• It will often have statements like:
- The results in table one show…..
- ….. As seen in Graph 1 where….
• Linking of results to investigation question and to the aim to explain whether or
not the investigation data and findings support the hypothesis.
• Identifies limitations to the investigation and offers improvements.
• Outlines the implications of the investigation and suggests further investigations
(next steps)
Conclusion

• The conclusion should be a response the research question (title).

• Refers to the aim and hypothesis .
• Your results should identify the extent to which the analysis has
answered the investigation question, with no new information
being introduced.
Poster Statement

This goes in the large central section of the poster.

It is a communication statement reporting the key finding of the
investigation as a one-sentence summary.
