1 Addition formulae
Proving sin(α + β)
cos(α + β)

2 right angled triangle ABC and ACE with angles α , β

Triangle ACE has hypotenuse 1
a
Cos θ = x/r
Sin θ= y/r

X= r Cos θ
Y= r Sin θ

y
θ

x
Hypotenuse of triangle ACE is 1
So EC will be sin β
AC will be cos β

Hypotenuse of triangle ABC is cos β

So EC will be sin α cos β
AC will be cos α cos β
Draw a line ED parallel to BC
FC parallel to DB
Angle EFC is 90°

Angle BAC is α so Angle ACF will

also be α
(alternate interior angles)

Cos β sin β
Sin α= FC/sin β sin β
α
Cos β= EF/sin β 90-α
C
F
FC= Sin α sin β Sin α sin β

EF= Cos β sin β

Corresponding angle and alternate interior
angle
So if we are considering triangle
ADE hypotenuse is 1

Cos β sin β
ED is sin(α + β)
Since it is considering as a
singletriangle.
Sin α sin β

Here ,
ED= EF + FD [ FD= CB= sin α Cos β ]
= Cos β sin β+ sin α Cos β

So we can write it as
sin(α + β) = Cos β sin β+ sin α Cos β
So if we are considering triangle
ADE hypotenuse is 1

Cos β sin β
AD is cos(α + β)
Since it is considering as a
singletriangle.
Sin α sin β

Here ,
AD=AB- DB [DB= FC= sin α sin β ]
= Cos α Cos β - sin α sin β

So we can write it as
cos(α + β) = Cos α Cos β - sin α sin β
∟FAB= ∟CAF + ∟BAC
= (α − β) + β = α
So ∟FAB = α
