GAMMA RAYS

Grade 10-Rose
GAMMA RAYS

-are electromagnetic waves that have 10,000 times as much

energy as the energy carried by a visible light.
-Gamma rays are photons emitted from the nucleus, often as
part of radioactive decay.
GAMMA RAYS

• Are released spontaneously by certain heavy nuclide of

radioactive materials, the process is called Radioactive
Decay.
GAMMA RAYS EXPOSURE

A. Direct External Exposure/ Direct Internal

Exposure- may happen when an individual inhales or
ingests radioactive materials that are considered as a
Gamma Ray emitter.
GAMMA RAY EMITTERS (SAMPLE)

• Potassium -40
• Cobalt -60
• Cesium -137
ADVANTAGES FROM GAMMA RAYS

• Doesn’t need a power source to work because they’re

produced by radioactive elements.
• It can also be used to treat cancer. Radiation therapy or
radiotherapy, uses high energy gamma rays to kill cancer
cells and shrink tumors.
USES OF GAMMA RAYS

1. Gamma Ray Astronomy

2. Food Sterilization
3. Sterilization of Medical Equipment
4. Radio Therapy
5. Irradiation of Art Objects
6. Tracers in Medicine
7. Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy
USES OF GAMMA RAYS

8. Gamma –knife Surgery

9. Medical Imaging
10. Mineral Exploration
HAZARDS OF GAMMA RAYS EXPOSURE

• It can cause mild to severe damage to the human tissue

that can lead to serious illness like cancer or various
forms.
• It can kill cells (body cells) including cancerous cells.
