 This course is designed to equip the pre-service teachers with knowledge and
understanding of the different philosophies, theories, legal bases, and policies of
special needs and inclusive education. It includes the study of typical and
atypical development of children, learning characteristics of students with
special educational needs; gifted and talented learners, learners with difficulty
seeing, hearing, communicating, walking/moving, remembering and focusing,
self-care, and different circumstances. Moreover, you will be provided with skills
in the selection and use of strategies in teaching and managing these learners in a
regular class.

1. Discuss the meaning and significance of diversity;
2. Demonstrate the use of Loden’s Wheel of Diversity;
3. Support diversity as a positive component of the development of relationship, education, and
organization.
What is Diversity (Mor Barak, 2005)?

 all differences that make us unique, including but not limited to race, color,
ethnicity, language, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, gender, socio-
economic, status, age and physical and mental ability.
 includes physical characteristics that obvious and noticeable; beliefs, mind
sets, values, sexual identity, intelligence, personality and others that are not
easily evident or visible
What is Diversity?

 Comes from the Latin word "divertere", which means to turn away, separate,
oppose. (Latin Dictionary, ND)
 Defines it as the state or quality of being different or varied; a variety or
assessment; a point of difference; the inclusion of people of different races,
genders, religions, etc. in a group; the relation that holds between two entities
when and only they are not identical; the property of being numerically
distinct.
What is Diversity (UNESCO)?

 United Nations Educational, Sicientific and Cultural Organization's Guide in


enduring inclusion and equity in Education (2017), define it as "people's
differences which may relate to their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation,
language, culture, religion, mental and physical ability, class and immagigration
status."

ABILITY AND DISABILITY

 Ability- to the possession of the qualities required to do something; necessary


skill or competence, or power.
 Disability- refers to the impairements, activity limitation, and participation
restrictions, referring to the negative aspects of the interacrion between an
individual (with health condition) and that individual's contexual factors
(environmental and personal factors).
Dilemma of Diversity

 Being different is an issue in the family, school, and community.


 Women experience discrimnations.
 Certain race are stereotyped.
 Same-sex relations are questioned.
 Children with special needs shunned with the reason that they are not ready to
enter school.
 Children from indigenous groups are bullied.
